Brentford strengthened hopes of reaching next season’s Champions League places with a 3-0 victory over West Ham, a result that also deepened West Ham’s relegation concerns in the Premier League. Brentford’s win at the Gtech Community Stadium lifted the team into sixth, while West Ham stayed just above the bottom three.
The league table implications were clear. Brentford climbed three positions to sixth, which could be enough for Champions League qualification if Aston Villa finish fifth and win the Europa League. West Ham remained two points ahead of Tottenham in 17th, but could fall into the bottom three if Roberto De Zerbi’s team defeat Villa on Sunday.
The first half featured heavy pressure from both sides and several major chances, yet produced
only one goal. Konstantinos Mavropanos diverted the ball into West Ham’s net on 15 minutes, turning in under pressure from Michael Kayode. Mavropanos thought there was instant redemption, but a powerful header at the other end was ruled offside.

Valentin Castellanos came closest for Brentford before half-time, striking both posts in remarkable fashion. First, a curling effort from the edge of the area hit the upright. Later, a thumping header from a corner bounced off the opposite post, with West Ham surviving repeated scares as the interval approached.
Igor Thiago and Mikkel Damsgaard both missed clear openings during that first period, yet each player later converted. Early in the second half, Dango Ouattara drove into the penalty area and was brought down by El Hadji Malick Diouf. Thiago stepped up on 54 minutes and sent Mads Hermansen the wrong way from the spot.
Damsgaard added the third goal eight minutes from time, turning neatly before finishing low to cap Brentford’s display. That strike arrived moments after Crysencio Summerville hit the crossbar with a curling shot, the third time West Ham struck the woodwork during the contest, underlining West Ham’s frustration in front of goal.
Brentford arrived on this derby clash after six league matches without a win, drawing five and losing one. The team had also gone six Premier League home games without victory, with four draws and two defeats. Keith Andrews’ side ended both sequences emphatically by securing three important points in the chase for European football.
The shot data backed Brentford’s attacking threat but also highlighted West Ham’s misfortune. Brentford attempted 14 shots, producing 2.04 expected goals (xG), while West Ham’s 13 efforts carried an xG of 0.72. West Ham became only the fourth team this Premier League season to hit the woodwork at least three times in one match.
| Match | Competition | Team hitting woodwork 3+ times |
|---|---|---|
| Liverpool vs Manchester United (October) | Premier League | Liverpool |
| Brentford vs Sunderland (January) | Premier League | Brentford |
| Chelsea vs Manchester United (last month) | Premier League | Chelsea |
| Brentford vs West Ham | Premier League | West Ham |
Thiago’s successful penalty took the forward to 22 league goals this season, narrowing the gap to Premier League Golden Boot leader Erling Haaland to two. Before Saturday, Thiago had scored only once in London derbies this league campaign, from 21 shots in those matches, so this goal ended a specific derby drought.
