Lewis Hamilton's connection to Arsenal began with a simple question from his sister. And a punch.
The seven-time Formula 1 world champion has opened up about the childhood moment that turned him into a lifelong Arsenal supporter, as he celebrated the club's first Premier League title since the famous Invincibles season of 2003-04.
For Hamilton, Arsenal's long-awaited triumph was about much more than football.
It was the culmination of a journey he has followed since childhood, one that has increasingly become a source of inspiration away from the racetrack.
Lewis Hamilton admits Arsenal title win left him emotional
Arsenal finally ended their 22-year wait for a league title after Manchester City's draw against Bournemouth confirmed Mikel Arteta's side as Premier League champions.
The achievement triggered
an emotional reaction from Hamilton, who admitted he was moved to tears by the moment.
"I think like for everyone, [I was] very emotional," Hamilton said.
"I shed a tear, to be honest, because I remember I was five years old and I used to play in the local [in] Stevenage, Peartree Way, used to play around the corner football with friends. "
Hamilton recalled growing up as the only Black child in his local football group, surrounded by friends who supported rival clubs including West Ham, Tottenham and Manchester United.
Trying to fit in often meant switching allegiances depending on who he was playing with.
Until his sister intervened.
The 'dead arm' that settled the debate
Hamilton revealed the exact moment his football loyalties were decided.
His sister, unwilling to let him continue changing teams, delivered a memorable message on the walk home.
"So, I was bouncing between all these when I was like four or five years old, depending on who I was with," Hamilton explained.
"And my sister, I remember exactly, I messaged her the other day, she was walking me home, and she asked me what team I supported, and she gave me a dead arm. But then she gave me a little dig in my arm and said, 'You have to support Arsenal. ' So, we had a laugh about it. "
More than three decades later, Hamilton is still following that instruction.
Arsenal's journey resonates with Lewis Hamilton
Part of the reason Arsenal's title win meant so much to Hamilton was the length of the wait.
The club had endured years of near misses, rebuilding projects and heartbreak since their last league triumph in 2004.
"But we've had so many near close moments, and to finally get it, it was wow," Hamilton said.
"A lot of emotion came up for me, as I'm sure for so many people. I'm just so happy and proud of the team. "
The parallels with Hamilton's own career are difficult to ignore.
Success at the highest level rarely comes in a straight line. Championships often require patience, resilience and the ability to keep believing through setbacks-qualities Hamilton has relied upon throughout his record-breaking Formula 1 career.
Why Arsenal's rebuild inspires Lewis Hamilton
Beyond the title itself, Hamilton said he has been impressed by the direction Arsenal have taken under Mikel Arteta.
After several years outside the title conversation, the North London club gradually rebuilt its squad, trusted a long-term vision and eventually emerged as champions.
For Hamilton, that process has been just as impressive as the trophy.
"I think the direction they've gone in the past couple of years has been just fantastic," he said.
"So very inspired by what they've done, really proud of the team, and I think they can go from strength to strength from here and only get stronger. "
It is a sentiment that extends beyond football.
As Hamilton continues his own chapter with Ferrari, Arsenal's rise serves as a reminder that sustained success is often built through patience, belief and long-term planning.
And it all started, at least for Hamilton, with a sister's dead arm and a simple instruction to support the Gunners.
