Hockey India has announced a ₹50 lakh cash award for the Indian women's hockey team after its historic fifth-place finish at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, marking the federation's recognition of a campaign that produced India's best result at the tournament in 52 years. The reward comes after Salima Tete and Co. defeated world No. 5 Germany 3-1 in the fifth-place classification match in Amstelveen on August 27.
The announcement also stands in contrast to the treatment of the Indian men's team, which finished eighth at the same World Cup without Hockey India publicly announcing a specific cash reward for its campaign. The men's side ended its tournament with a 3-4 defeat to Belgium on penalties.
For the women, however, the fifth-place finish represented
a significant milestone after more than five decades without reaching those heights at the World Cup.

India entered the classification phase having established themselves as one of the surprise performers of the tournament.
The team lost just once throughout its campaign while holding higher-ranked opponents China, England and Australia to draws. It also produced one of its most emphatic results with a 6-1 victory over South Africa.
The campaign culminated in a 3-1 victory over Germany, giving India fifth place and its best World Cup finish since the inaugural tournament in 1974, when the country finished fourth.

"This is a historic result for Indian women's hockey. To finish fifth at a World Cup after 52 years is a testament to the hard work, resilience and fighting spirit this team has shown throughout the tournament," Tirkey said.
"On behalf of Hockey India, I am pleased to announce a cash award of ₹50 lakh for the team as a token of our appreciation, and I hope this inspires the players to keep raising the bar," he added.
The award comes at the end of Sjoerd Marijne's campaign as chief coach, with the Dutchman having overseen the side during its run to fifth place.
The men's team leaves without a special cash award
The women's reward also provides a notable contrast with India's men's campaign.
The men's team finished eighth after losing to Belgium 3-4 in a penalty shootout. Hockey India's public announcement following the tournament did not include a specific cash prize for the squad.
The difference is understandable in terms of the results: India's women produced their best World Cup finish in 52 years, while the men endured a disappointing campaign and finished outside the top half.
Yet the contrasting outcomes make the women's ₹50 lakh award an interesting marker of how Hockey India is choosing to recognise a historic achievement.
