Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature in India's upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand despite reportedly being fully fit, with the team management prioritising his workload ahead of the red-ball leg of the tour. According to a report by *The Times of India* published on October 15, the Indian pace spearhead is expected to build up his match fitness through an India A fixture before joining the senior team for the Test series.
The reported decision reflects India's focus on keeping Bumrah available for key Test assignments, including the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle and next year's five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Rather than risk adding to his workload through bilateral white-ball cricket, the management
is understood to be planning a gradual transition towards the longer format.
Jasprit Bumrah Expected to Play India A Match Before New Zealand Tests
According to the report, Bumrah is expected to feature in the third India A fixture, scheduled to begin on November 6. The match would provide him with an opportunity to gain valuable red-ball practice ahead of the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington on November 19.
Bumrah has reportedly begun preparing for red-ball cricket in Ahmedabad and is expected to visit the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) later this month for a routine check. His visit is not being attributed to a fresh injury concern, with the reports indicating that the fast bowler is currently fit.
The proposed India A appearance would allow the team management to assess his workload in a match environment before the senior side begins its Test campaign.
Why India Could Rest Bumrah for the ODI Series
India's reported plan centres on managing Bumrah's workload rather than responding to an injury setback. Given his importance to the pace attack, the management is understood to be keen to ensure he is prepared for the physical demands of Test cricket.
The five-match ODI series against New Zealand would add to his schedule before he switches formats. Skipping the white-ball leg could provide him with additional preparation time and reduce the demands placed on him ahead of the Tests.
The strategy also reflects longer-term planning, with India's five-Test series against Australia early next year featuring prominently in the management's considerations.
Bumrah's availability for major red-ball assignments is likely to remain a key factor in decisions over his participation in bilateral cricket. However, his omission from the New Zealand ODI squad has not been officially confirmed in the supplied reports.
India Await Squad Announcements for New Zealand Tour
India's ODI and Test squads for the New Zealand tour are expected to be announced in the coming days, according to the reports. The selectors are also monitoring updates on players including Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna and Rishabh Pant.
Bumrah's reported workload plan is part of a wider selection process that will determine how India balance immediate commitments with the demands of their upcoming Test schedule.
For now, the indications are that the management would prefer to prepare Bumrah specifically for red-ball cricket rather than involve him in the ODI series. His expected India A appearance on November 6 would be an important step in that preparation, ahead of the first Test in Wellington on November 19.
Until the squads are officially announced, however, Bumrah's participation in the New Zealand ODIs remains unconfirmed.
