Sandro Tonali is being tipped as the ideal signing for Juventus, with Miralem Pjanic arguing that the Newcastle United midfielder currently represents the highest level among Italian central players and would
give Luciano Spalletti’s side exactly the profile missing from the club’s push to catch Serie A leaders Inter.
Pjanic, who spent four seasons in Turin, believes Juventus require a commanding presence in midfield to match their improving league position. Juventus sit four points behind Inter, and Pjanic views the growing consistency under Luciano Spalletti as proof that a final step in quality, such as Tonali, could be decisive.
Speaking to Tuttosport, Pjanic joked about Juventus’ current needs before turning serious over Tonali’s value. Pjanic said: "They need something in the middle of the park. Somebody like Pjanic would help. " Pjanic then underlined that active playing days are over, explaining: "But I've retired now, so I'll just enjoy my kid and be a father. "
Pjanic then made a strong case for Sandro Tonali to join Juventus, stressing qualities that would suit Serie A. Pjanic stated: "I have no doubts, I'd sign Sandro Tonali right away. He'd be the perfect element. This Juventus side need somebody like him in the middle of the park. Tonali has strength, personality; he reads the game well and knows how to build up from the back. It would be a great coup for Juventus. As of today, he's the best Italian midfielder. "
Tonali moved to Newcastle United from AC Milan in 2023 and, despite a lengthy suspension for breaching betting rules, the 25-year-old has become one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League. After returning from the ban early last season, Tonali has played 70 matches in all competitions, scoring six goals and delivering seven assists.
Advanced metrics underline why Sandro Tonali is drawing Juventus links. In the current league campaign, Tonali ranks third in Newcastle’s squad for open-play shot-ending sequence involvements, with 50. Only Bruno Guimaraes, on 76, and Jacob Murphy, with 56, have higher totals, highlighting Tonali’s influence in Newcastle’s attacking construction from deeper areas.
Pjanic also discussed Juventus’ overall trajectory, praising the impact of Luciano Spalletti on the squad’s mentality and structure. Pjanic said: "The Juventus comeback does not surprise me at all. On the contrary, I can say that I expected it after Spalletti's arrival. Luciano makes the difference at this level. Juventus are improving game after game, so they should not set limits for themselves. All the top sides are quite close in the table, and when you play for Juventus, you must always aim for the top. "
With Juventus chasing Inter and Sandro Tonali thriving at Newcastle United after a difficult suspension period, debate around a potential move will likely continue. Pjanic’s comments place Tonali as the leading Italian midfielder of the moment, and present a clear argument that such a profile could complete Juventus’ evolving midfield under Luciano Spalletti.
