New Delhi, Oct 14: As India embarks on their tour of New Zealand, former national fielding coach R. Sridhar believes the Men in Blue possess an exceptionally solid blueprint, provided they manage their bowling depth and hone individual player management.
Speaking in a recent media interaction, Sridhar offered an incisive appraisal of India's current white-ball framework, the quest to reduce over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah, the hunt for dependable all-rounders, and the nuanced science of coaching elite athletes.
The Bumrah Cushion and Bowling Reserves
One of the central debates surrounding India's white-ball set-up is workload management, specifically regarding pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Sridhar urges realism, noting that India must plan around Bumrah's periodic absences rather than
treating them as unforeseen crises.
"I think it is very important to build a pool of bowlers around Bumrah and accept that he will not play every match," Sridhar remarked. To bridge that gap, he championed the steady hand of veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose control and experience provide an anchor in shortest-format fixtures.
Assessing bowling figures in modern limited-overs cricket requires contextual nuance. Sridhar noted that heavily batter-friendly pitches in India often produce skewed numbers, making it unfair to judge bowlers purely on raw statistics. Among the newer crop, he highlighted youngsters like Prince Yadav, who has demonstrated sharp yorker-execution skills, and acknowledged Arshdeep Singh's steady evolution into a dependable strike bowler despite occasional fluctuations.
The All-Rounder Puzzle
Sridhar singled out the all-rounder slot as a genuine strategic vulnerability. While Hardik Pandya historically provided pivotal breakthroughs across phases, emerging talents like Nitish Kumar Reddy are still fine-tuning their trade.
Sridhar also flagged an over-dependence on Axar Patel in the T20 arena, while clarifying Ravindra Jadeja's evolving scope in the 50-over format. In ODIs, Sridhar envisions Jadeja primarily as a batting all-rounder who can reliably chip in six to eight overs, leaving the remaining overs to complementary bowlers. He also pointed to promising secondary options like Naman Dhir, whose ability to extract life off the pitch adds a fresh dimension alongside Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, and Vipraj Nigam. The resources exist; the real test lies in optimizing their deployment.
An Engine Room Built for 2027
While bowling combinations invite ongoing experimentation, Sridhar expressed absolute faith in India's ODI batting spine heading toward the 2027 World Cup:
"I think the ODI team is beautifully settled. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma are at the top, Virat Kohli is at number three, Shreyas Iyer at four, and KL Rahul at five. These are five outstanding players and match-winners in their own right. "
With high-caliber all-rounders and quality wrist-spinners layered beneath this established top five, Sridhar views preservation as the top priority. For the management, success hinges less on tinkering with combinations and more on keeping this core unit conditioned, injury-free, and cohesive over the coming cycle.
Sridhar's Philosophy: 'Coach the Face, Not the Symptom'
With a punishing international calendar providing minimal turnaround between domestic matches and foreign assignments, adapting to New Zealand's breezy conditions and sharp time zone shifts poses a stern test. Offering encouragement to current fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh, Sridhar emphasized that mechanical drills alone won't solve technical lapses under fatigue.
Instead, Sridhar advocates a deeply individualized coaching philosophy:
"In coaching, one size does not fit all. We need to understand the person behind the player and develop an individual plan. The coaching staff must understand each player's workload, emotional state, performances, and life away from the field. "
His closing maxim captures the modern coaching ideal: "Coach the face, not the symptom. " For India, sustained success on foreign soil will come down to treating every player as a distinct human puzzle.
