Estevao and Lamine Yamal are being compared to football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo by Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. He believes they could reach similar heights if they enjoy their game.
Estevao showcased his talent by scoring a remarkable goal in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League. The Brazilian, at 18 years and 215 days, became the third teenager to score in each of his first three Champions League starts.
Estevao's performance was notable as he created three chances and attempted five dribbles, matching Pedro Neto among Chelsea players. Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal made twice as many attempts for Barcelona but saw his influence diminish after Ronald Araujo's dismissal. Despite this setback, Yamal's potential remains evident. Maresca emphasised the importance of patience from both Chelsea and Barcelona as these young talents develop.
Maresca spoke to BeIN Sports about the potential rivalry between Estevao and Yamal, highlighting their need for time to grow. "As Raphinha said, probably in the next 10, 15 years, Estevao and Lamine Yamal are probably going to be the next Messi and Ronaldo," he stated. However, he stressed that both players should focus on enjoying their football and improving daily.
Reflecting on Estevao's goal against Barcelona, Maresca recalled a similar strike when Estevao played for Palmeiras against Chelsea in the Club World Cup quarter-finals. "The goal Estevao scored reminded me of the one he scored against us in the Club World Cup," Maresca noted. He urged that comparisons with Messi and Ronaldo could place undue pressure on these young players.
Estevao's journey to Chelsea included a pre-arranged move following his impressive performances at Palmeiras. His ability to score from wide positions has drawn attention, but Maresca insists that both Estevao and Yamal must remain relaxed and enjoy their football without succumbing to external pressures.
Maresca concluded by emphasising the importance of happiness in training sessions for young players like Estevao and Yamal. He warned that comparing them too early with established stars like Ronaldo and Messi might be overwhelming for them at this stage of their careers.
