Mauricio Pochettino confirms Tim Ream will captain the United States at the 2026 World Cup, underlining Ream’s influence in the dressing room and on the pitch. Pochettino also views the coming friendly against Senegal, and another against Germany, as key preparation before the USA face Paraguay on 12 June.
Senegal arrive in the United States after a turbulent year, entering a World Cup ‘Group of Death’ with France, Norway and Iraq. The Lions of Teranga also come from a dramatic Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, where a title win was later withdrawn two months after their victory.
No player has been trusted with the armband more often by Pochettino than Ream, who has captained the USA in 16 of 23 matches under the coach. The 38-year-old defender
now has the chance to become the oldest USA player to appear at a World Cup, overtaking Fernando Clavijo’s mark from 1994.
The USA meet Senegal at Ream’s home stadium in Charlotte, which Pochettino believes will further underline the defender’s importance. The coach expects Ream’s knowledge of the venue, combined with long international experience, to guide younger teammates through a demanding build-up schedule and into the World Cup opener against Paraguay.
Pochettino stresses that Ream’s status as captain is not tied to selection alone, making clear the role extends beyond the starting line-up. "I am so grateful that he's with us, because he was a great captain, not only on the field, if not maybe more important, off the field," Pochettino said. "He has the experience, he has the capacity to be the leader that we want, the positive leader, acting and reflecting on the field and off the field.
"It's important for us to translate to you and translate to everyone that, playing or not playing, he is the captain. It's not [that] now he's the captain, he's going to be sure on the starting 11, eh? It doesn't mean that. But importantly always [he] is going to be, with armband or without armband. He's the captain, and he's a great, great guy. "

Pochettino views Senegal as a serious examination for the USMNT captain and squad, highlighting a roster packed with familiar names. "Senegal is one of the best teams. In the final of the game in Morocco, I don't know if to say it was a champion, or a different champion or no champion, but the quality is amazing," Pochettino added.
The coach is also eager to face several former club players in this World Cup test. "It's going to be nice, because we are going to meet [Idrissa] Gana Gueye, Nico Jackson, Sadio Mane, different players that we know very well, we coached in different clubs. It's a fantastic team. It's, for me, one of the contenders from Africa. They are going to be one of the contenders of the FIFA World Cup, I have no doubt, because of the capacity and the quality of the players. "
The build-up schedule, Ream’s leadership role and the demanding friendly against Senegal give the USMNT a clear early test before Germany and then Paraguay. Pochettino’s comments underline trust in Ream’s influence, while Senegal’s form and group draw confirm that both sides approach the 2026 World Cup with serious expectations.
