Bayern Munich reached the Champions League semi-finals after a wild 6-4 aggregate victory over Real Madrid, sealing a 4-3 second-leg win. Eduardo Camavinga’s late red card shifted the momentum, allowing Luiz Diaz and Michael Olise to strike in the closing minutes and set up a last-four meeting with holders Paris Saint-Germain.
The turning point arrived with four minutes of normal time left, when Camavinga, already booked, picked up the ball to stop a Bayern free-kick. Madrid were then forced to defend deeper, and Diaz’s 20-yard effort deflected in off Eder Militao before Olise curved home a fourth in stoppage time to settle the tie.
The second leg opened at frantic speed, with both teams on the scoresheet inside six minutes for the first time
in any Champions League knockout clash between them. Manuel Neuer’s misplaced pass after only 35 seconds went straight to Arda Guler, who calmly swept a first-time shot from 30 yards into an empty net.
Bayern answered almost immediately through direct play from a corner. Joshua Kimmich’s delivery trapped Andriy Lunin on his goal line, leaving Aleksandar Pavlovic free to nod in from point-blank range. That rapid exchange followed Bayern’s 2-0 first-leg success, which had given the Bundesliga side a firm advantage before Madrid’s early response.
Madrid regained the lead in the 29th minute when Guler bent a 25-yard free-kick over the wall and into the top-right corner. Neuer reached back but could not claw it away. Bayern refused to fade, and after nine minutes of pressure Harry Kane stroked a composed finish, taking the aggregate score to 3-3 at that stage.
The end-to-end pattern continued as Vinicius Junior smashed a strike against the crossbar, with Bayern’s defence stretched again. Moments later, Vinicius Junior slipped a precise pass into Kylian Mbappe’s path, and Mbappe slotted past Neuer on 42 minutes. That goal made it 3-2 on the night to Madrid and 4-4 overall at half-time.
Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid Champions League second-half and red cards
After the break, the game stayed open but the finishing level dipped. Olise curled two efforts narrowly over the bar, while Diaz missed two promising openings from the left side. Neuer then produced a sharp reflex stop from Mbappe’s close-range volley, keeping Bayern in touch as extra time began to look likely.
Camavinga’s dismissal reshaped the final minutes. Reduced to ten players, Madrid dropped deeper and struggled to clear their lines. Diaz found space on the edge of the box and saw a curling strike clip Militao and spin into the far corner. After the whistle, Guler’s angry protests brought a second Madrid red card.
The second leg also featured a notable social media moment, with Bayern later sharing a post that captured the mood among supporters and players. The tweet reflected the intensity of a tie that swung several times before Bayern finally progressed.Pics that go hard. pic.twitter.com/2Anon7ZuzMFC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) April 15, 2026
Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid Champions League records and data
Bayern’s nervous night followed a strong display at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg, where many expected the job to be almost done. Instead, Guler’s opener became the earliest goal in Real Madrid’s Champions League history, beating Gareth Bale’s 57-second strike against Legia Warsaw in November 2016.
That goal also set a new mark for Bayern, who had never conceded so early in the competition. It replaced Barcelona’s Raphinha effort after 55 seconds in October 2024 as their quickest concession. The first half brought more unwanted history, with Bayern allowing three goals before the interval in a Champions League knockout tie for the first time since April 2014, also against Real Madrid.
| Record | Player / Team | Detail | Season / Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Earliest Real Madrid Champions League goal | Arda Guler | Scored after 35 seconds vs Bayern | April 2026 |
| Previous earliest Real Madrid goal | Gareth Bale | Goal after 57 seconds vs Legia Warsaw | November 2016 |
| Earliest goal conceded by Bayern in Champions League | Bayern Munich | Conceded to Guler after 35 seconds | April 2026 |
| Previous earliest goal conceded by Bayern | Bayern Munich | Conceded to Raphinha after 55 seconds | October 2024 |
Within the first-half goal rush, Kane reached a major scoring landmark. The forward became the first player from any of Europe’s top five leagues to hit 50 goals in a single season since Erling Haaland netted 52 times in 2022-23. Mbappe also set a record by becoming the first player to score 10 away goals in one European Cup or Champions League campaign.
Camavinga’s dismissal meant Bayern avoided extra time and secured a 22nd European Cup or Champions League semi-final appearance. Only Madrid, with 33, have reached that stage more often. For Real Madrid, this defeat followed another two-leg loss in a quarter-final last season against Arsenal, mirroring a pattern seen previously only once, against Inter in 1966-67.
