Jose Mourinho says Benfica have already offered a new contract, even as reports link a Real Madrid reunion. Mourinho confirms the proposal exists but insists attention stays on Benfica’s final Primeira Liga match against Estoril on Saturday, with any decision delayed until after that game.
The 63-year-old is again a central figure in Real Madrid discussion, as pressure grows on Alvaro Arbeloa. Arbeloa replaced Xabi Alonso but has not collected a single trophy with Los Blancos this season, increasing outside talk about a possible coaching change at the Bernabeu.
Mourinho explains that Benfica moved first regarding his future, while Real Madrid have made no contact. He says the Lisbon club sent a formal proposal through his representative on Wednesday,
but Mourinho chose not to view any detail until Sunday, after league duties finish.
Mourinho states: "On Wednesday, I received an offer from Benfica to extend my contract," Mourinho said. "They gave it to my agent, but I didn't want to see it, know it or analyse it. I will do that only on Sunday. "
During Mourinho’s previous spell in Spain, between May 2010 and June 2013, Real Madrid collected major domestic trophies. Under Mourinho, Madrid won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana, while also posting strong results and scoring output in league competition.
The Portuguese coach oversaw 114 LaLiga matches for Real Madrid. The team recorded 87 wins, 16 draws and 11 defeats, earning an average of 2.4 points per game. Across those fixtures, Mourinho’s Madrid side scored 326 league goals, reflecting a consistent attacking threat.
| Team | Competition | Period | Record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real Madrid | LaLiga | May 2010 - June 2013 | 87W 16D 11L, 326 goals |
| Benfica | Primeira Liga | Since September last year | 22W 11D 0L (one match remaining) |
Mourinho only rejoined Benfica in September last year on a two-year agreement but has quickly shaped results. Benfica are unbeaten in the Primeira Liga under Mourinho, with 22 wins and 11 draws so far, and have just one league fixture left to complete the campaign.

Mourinho also addresses speculation directly, explaining the position of both clubs. Mourinho says: "Interest from Real Madrid? No, my agent met with Benfica and said, 'I have an official offer that I will send you'. And I said: 'I don't want it, send it to me on Sunday'. "
Mourinho adds that Real Madrid have not approached regarding the role. Mourinho says: "As for Real Madrid, they never said anything to me, but I would have given them the same answer. I will start thinking about it on Sunday. " The timeline leaves Mourinho’s next move open beyond the Estoril match.
