Colombia are back on football's biggest stage, and with a mix of experienced stars and exciting young talent, they will be aiming to make a strong statement at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
After missing out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Colombia have completed an impressive comeback under head coach Nestor Lorenzo. The South American side qualified comfortably from the CONMEBOL qualifiers and also reached the final of the 2024 Copa America, where they narrowly lost to Argentina after extra time. Their recent performances, including victories over both Brazil and Argentina, have raised expectations ahead of the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Led by captain James RodrÍguez, Colombia have announced a balanced squad featuring
experienced leaders and players in top form across Europe and South America. The team will compete in a group containing Portugal, DR Congo and Uzbekistan, and many fans believe Los Cafeteros could emerge as one of the tournament's dark horses.
James Rodriguez Leads Experienced Core
At 34, James RodrÍguez remains the face of Colombian football. The former Real Madrid star, now playing for Minnesota United in MLS, will captain the side in what could be his final World Cup appearance. RodrÍguez famously won the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup with six goals and will be expected to provide leadership and creativity once again.
Alongside him, experienced names such as Davinson Sánchez, Yerry Mina, Daniel MuÑoz, Jefferson Lerma and David Ospina add valuable tournament experience.
Luis Diaz and Richard Rios Among Key Players to Watch
Much of Colombia's attacking threat will come from Bayern Munich winger Luis DÍaz, who has enjoyed another outstanding season in Europe. DÍaz was also one of the leading scorers in South American qualifying and is expected to be Colombia's biggest attacking weapon.
Midfielder Richard RÍos has also attracted attention after his impressive performances in Europe, while Kevin CastaÑo, Jhon Arias, Juan Fernando Quintero and Jaminton Campaz provide additional quality in midfield. Up front, Jhon Córdoba and Cucho Hernández offer further attacking options alongside DÍaz.
Back on the World Cup stage after missing Qatar 2022, Colombia is arriving with renewed confidence, a strong blend of experience and youth, and genuine hopes of making a deep run at FIFA World Cup 2026.
