Ravindra Jadeja is set to make a return to domestic cricket, with the Indian all-rounder confirming his availability for Saurashtra in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. The experienced left-hander is expected
to play two group-stage matches - against Services on January 6 and Gujarat on January 8 - both scheduled to be held in Alur.
A senior official from the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) confirmed to TOI reagrding Jadeja's participation, stating, "Yes, he has confirmed to play these two games on January 6 and January 8. This is the plan for now.
" The arrangement, however, could change depending on national commitments, particularly if Jadeja earns selection for India's upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. The Indian squad is expected to assemble early in Vadodara ahead of the series opener on January 11, which may impact his domestic availability.
As things stand, Jadeja is likely to get match practice in Saurashtra's final two group encounters - an important opportunity for the 37-year-old as competition for places in India's limited-overs setup intensifies. Jadeja was left out of the ODI series in Australia but made a comeback in the subsequent tour of South Africa. Despite his return, he had a modest outing, finishing with just one wicket across three matches and scoring 56 runs in two innings.
The Australia omission sparked speculation about Jadeja's long-term role in the ODI side, a debate that gained momentum following comments from chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Addressing the matter, Agarkar had clarified, "He is very much in the plans. But there will be some competition for places. Of course, he was there in the Champions Trophy squad, because we took those extra spinners with the conditions there. At the moment, we could only carry one and get some balance in the team with Washi and Kuldeep there as well. And I don't think we are going to need more than that in Australia. "
Jadeja's main competition comes from Axar Patel, who impressed in his absence during the Australia ODIs. Axar finished as India's second-highest run-scorer in the series and also chipped in with three wickets, strengthening his case as India's preferred left-arm spin all-rounder.
With an eye on future ICC events - including the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, where India are unlikely to field two similar all-rounders - Jadeja's Vijay Hazare appearances could play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of his international career.
