Known for his no-nonsense approach, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir is understood to be considering an image makeover and may have hired a public relations agency based out of Mumbai for the same, sources
told MyKhel.
Gambhir has often been perceived as being at loggerheads with senior cricketers such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, an image that has attracted constant scrutiny and debate in recent months.
With India set to defend their T20 World Cup title at home, starting February 7, and also eyeing the 50-over World Cup 2027 in South Africa, pressure is mounting on the former Indian opener to ensure a united dressing room. Gambhir has faced considerable flak over strained relationships with senior members of the squad, a narrative that has refused to die down.
Meanwhile, sources close to Gambhir have denied that he is seeking assistance from a PR agency for an image makeover.
The larger question is whether Gautam Gambhir's proposed image makeover will actually help India perform better on the field. While perceptions and narratives matter, results ultimately define a coach's success.
What is beyond doubt, however, is that Gambhir continues to enjoy unprecedented backing from the BCCI. Despite the Indian Test team losing a home series to New Zealand and South Africa, apart from suffering defeats in Australia, there has been no visible threat to his position. Such unwavering support strongly suggests that the BCCI holds Gambhir in high regard and remains confident in his long-term vision as head coach.
The board's faith indicates that results alone are not the sole metric being applied to judge him at this stage. Instead, Gambhir appears to be viewed as a key figure in shaping India's future, even if the journey involves short-term setbacks. Whether an image reset can complement that trust and translate into improved performances remains to be seen.
Already, the BCCI has firmly denied reports suggesting that 'Guru' Gambhir could be replaced as India's Test coach by former cricketer VVS Laxman. The board's clarification has effectively put to rest speculation about any immediate change in leadership within the Test setup and the talks of split coaching.
With his contract running until 2027, Gambhir appears to be firmly entrenched in the BCCI's long-term plans. There is also a strong possibility that he could continue beyond that period, potentially staying on through the 2028 Olympics cycle, should India's broader vision and performance roadmap align with his coaching philosophy.
