As Iran secured a 0-0 draw against Belgium in their FIFA World Cup 2026 encounter, Iran's goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand has made himself known with an excellent performance.
The Iranian keeper has made seven decent saves in the match, but one of his saves to deny Belgium's Maxim De Cuyper has earned all the plaudits.
In the 2nd half, Kevin de Bruyne's well-controlled cut back across the six-yard box was met by De Cuyper superbly, but Beiranvand somehow got his hand out and stopped the shot, which looked a certain goal. The reach from the Iranian keeper was excellent, and the hand was powerful as well, which denied the Belgian a goal.
Although Belgium went down to ten men soon after that, the lanky Iranian still had to make a few more saves at the final
stages of the match.
Who is Alireza Beiranvand?
Alireza Beiranvand stands as one of Iran's most celebrated footballers, a towering goalkeeper whose journey from rural poverty to international stardom embodies resilience, talent, and determination. Born on 21 September 1992 in the small village of Sarab-e Yas in Khorramabad County, Lorestan Province, the 33-year-old plays for Tractor in the Persian Gulf Pro League and remains a cornerstone of the Iran national team.
Early Life and Humble Beginnings
Beiranvand grew up in a nomadic Kurdish Lak family that moved frequently in search of pasture for their sheep. As the eldest child, he began working from a young age, herding livestock in the rugged terrain of Lorestan. Football provided an escape; he initially played as a striker in local games and a traditional stone-throwing contest called "Dal Paran, which helped develop his powerful arm.
At around the age of 12, he made the life-changing decision to run away from home and head to Tehran to pursue his dream of becoming a professional footballer. His father had discouraged formal education or serious sports ambitions, prioritizing family work instead. This bold move marked the start of years of hardship that would define his character.
Beiranvand's Struggle: Homeless Nights, Washing Cars
Upon arriving in the capital, young Beiranvand faced immediate challenges. He was homeless for periods, sleeping rough on the streets while trying to break into football. To survive, he took on grueling odd jobs: washing cars (particularly SUVs, capitalizing on his height), working in a dressmaking factory, a pizza restaurant, and even as a street cleaner. Despite these difficulties, he continued training and playing whenever possible.
A chance encounter or persistence eventually led him to youth setups. He joined Vahdat and later Naft Tehran's youth ranks. His switch from striker to goalkeeper came somewhat by accident - when the regular keeper was injured, Beiranvand stepped in and delivered a standout performance that convinced coaches of his potential in goal. This serendipitous moment set the foundation for his professional path.
Career
Alireza Beiranvand rose to prominence with Naft Tehran before becoming one of Iran's finest goalkeepers during two successful spells at Persepolis, winning multiple league titles and helping the club reach the 2018 AFC Champions League final. He also had brief stints in Europe with Royal Antwerp and Boavista. Since joining Tractor in 2024, he has continued his success, winning the 2024-25 Persian Gulf Pro League title. Internationally, Beiranvand has been Iran's first-choice goalkeeper since 2015, famously saving Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and earning over 80 caps.
Records, Awards, and Playing Style
Beiranvand holds two official Guinness World Records: the farthest throw of a football in a competitive match (61.00 metres against South Korea in 2016) and the longest drop kick (78.01 metres for Persepolis in 2019). These feats highlight his exceptional athleticism and technique.
Individually, he was named Iranian Footballer of the Year in 2019 and won the Persian Gulf Pro League Golden Glove multiple times. He was the first Iranian goalkeeper nominated for The Best FIFA Football Awards.
