Brentford’s hopes of qualifying for Europe suffered a setback as Manchester United claimed a 2-1 win, despite Keith Andrews’ side creating the clearer chances. The defeat extended Brentford’s winless Premier League run to six matches and left the club’s push for a first European campaign under pressure with four games still to play.
That sequence of six league games without victory, including five draws and one defeat, is Brentford’s longest such stretch since a nine-match barren spell between February and April 2024. The latest loss leaves Brentford two points behind sixth-placed Brighton, a key position in the race for European spots this season.
The Opta supercomputer rates Brentford’s chance of ending the campaign in sixth at 10.1%, behind
rivals in the same chase. Brighton are given a 46.5% probability, with Bournemouth at 14.2% and Chelsea at 13.4% in the simulations, which cover the final four Premier League rounds.
Brentford still have a demanding run-in, facing West Ham, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Liverpool. Andrews described the challenge as sizeable but kept faith in the group’s direction and mindset. The coach suggested that the performance at Manchester United showed Brentford can compete with high-level opponents in the closing weeks.
At Old Trafford, Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko struck in the first half to give Manchester United control. Both goals arrived before the interval and came against a Brentford side that regularly opened up the United defence but missed several promising situations, especially during the early stages.
Brentford’s top scorer Igor Thiago had three major opportunities before half-time but did not convert any of them. The clearest saw Igor Thiago unable to finish from close range after Keane Lewis-Potter delivered a precise low cross. Those misses proved important as Manchester United protected their lead for most of the contest.
Underlying metrics highlighted Brentford’s attacking threat despite the defeat. Brentford recorded an expected goals figure of 1.43 from 12 attempts, compared with Manchester United’s 1.27 from 11 shots at Caoimhin Kelleher’s goal. Dango Ouattara struck the post after the interval, adding to the visitors’ sense that more had been available.
Brentford finally scored in the 87th minute when Mathias Jensen drove a low effort into the bottom-left corner. The late goal reflected the pressure Brentford applied for long spells but arrived too late to change the outcome. Manchester United managed the closing minutes and secured three points that damaged Brentford’s European target.
Brentford European bid and Andrews’ assessment
Andrews praised the response after a slow opening phase, while accepting that missed chances cost Brentford. Andrews highlighted the team’s mentality at a difficult venue and suggested the display showed progress in how Brentford handle major away fixtures in the Premier League.
"Pleased with the performance. They started better than we did, and we were on the back foot. But after that a top reaction," Andrews told Sky Sports. "I thought we were outstanding for large parts of the game, but we couldn't take our opportunities. I enjoyed watching us play in every aspect after the first 10 minutes. "
"The bravery and courage we showed, to come somewhere like this and play in that manner shows a good step in the right direction. The next step is being clinical and ruthless. " Andrews stressed that turning promising displays into consistent results will be essential during the run-in.
"Anyone that watches us will see we are a team with a lot of spirit. We have a nice click around the group. We fight hard, but you have to earn results in this division. " Andrews referred to the togetherness in the squad and the need to match effort with finishing quality.
"We have been on a really good journey this year that allows us to come to a ground like this and play in that way. " The head coach viewed the performance as another stage in Brentford’s development rather than a step backwards, despite the defeat to Manchester United.
"I saw a lot of confidence tonight. I saw personality, a team that is doing everything it can to get results, a defiant Andrews added. There is absolute belief in everything we do. We are not playing safe, I don't want us to be that team. We set up in a brave fashion against a top team tonight and unfortunately we couldn't quite get there"

Brentford European bid and remaining fixtures
Brentford’s upcoming matches will go a long way to deciding whether the club reaches Europe for the first time. The fixtures also feature opponents with their own ambitions in the Premier League, ensuring little margin for error after the narrow loss against Manchester United.
| Brentford remaining opponents | Competition |
|---|---|
| West Ham | Premier League |
| Manchester City | Premier League |
| Crystal Palace | Premier League |
| Liverpool | Premier League |
Brentford leave Old Trafford with frustration over missed chances but also with evidence that the team can create against high-level opponents. The defeat affects the European picture yet has not reduced Andrews’ belief in the squad’s direction, with four demanding league fixtures now set to define the season’s final outcome.
