Keith Andrews praised Brentford after a 3-2 win at Newcastle United lifted the team into the Premier League’s top seven. Dango Ouattara struck the decisive goal on 85 minutes at St James’ Park, sealing three away points and ensuring Brentford will finish the weekend inside the leading pack.
The result continued a strong recent away run for Brentford in the Premier League. After losing seven of their first eight league matches on the road this season, with one win, Brentford have now taken four victories from their last five away fixtures, with only one defeat during that sequence.
Brentford’s success also secured only their second league double over Newcastle United, repeating an achievement last managed in the 1934-35 campaign. The three points
moved Brentford level with defending champions Liverpool. Liverpool would slip below the Bees if Liverpool lose by two goals against Manchester City on Sunday.
Andrews spoke about Brentford’s rise and the dressing room spirit after the full-time whistle. Andrews told Sky Sports: "It's a special group. I said that from day one and it came from a very genuine place and how I felt about the players having known them, known their qualities as people, known their capabilities as players and what we have done is gone from strength to strength and I love seeing the development and evolution of the team. "
The head coach described strong emotions following the victory. Andrews said the main feeling was pride in the squad’s attitude and quality under pressure. Andrews felt Brentford handled everything Newcastle United produced and played the kind of controlled, practical football needed to succeed at a demanding stadium like St James’ Park.
| Team | Premier League away record 2025-26 | League doubles over Newcastle United |
|---|---|---|
| Brentford | First 8 away games: W1 L7; last 5 away games: W4 L1 | 2 (1934-35 and 2025-26) |
The match itself swung several times. Newcastle United scored first and then had a major chance to extend that advantage when Yoane Wissa, now playing for Newcastle, saw a close-range header cleared off the line by Vitaly Janelt. That intervention proved vital, as Janelt then headed Brentford level shortly afterwards from a dangerous cross delivered by Ouattara.
Brentford turned the contest around when Igor Thiago converted from the penalty spot, making it 2-1 to the visitors. Newcastle United responded as Bruno Guimaraes equalised with a penalty in the 79th minute. However, Brentford broke forward at speed late on, and Ouattara ended a rapid counter-attack with the 85th-minute winner.
Ouattara’s goal came on a landmark occasion, as the winger marked a 100th Premier League appearance with the decisive strike. That goal also meant Ouattara has now scored in back-to-back league matches for the first time since 2022, underlining an improved attacking contribution at an important stage of the season.
Andrews highlighted Ouattara’s improvement when reflecting on the performance. "He's growing all the time," Andrews said ofOuattara, who has scored in successive league games for the first time since 2022. "The cross was sensational, and then the finish was outstanding. He's constantly evolving his game, he's a big part of our group. "
Brentford Premier League expectations and Newcastle United issues
Many observers expected Brentford to struggle this season after coach Thomas Frank left and key forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa were sold. Despite those departures, Brentford have climbed towards the European places. The win at Newcastle United strengthened the view that the reshaped squad is adapting effectively under Andrews.
Newcastle United’s problems protecting leads continued against Brentford. Newcastle went in front and then levelled again late on, yet still lost. Newcastle have now dropped more points from winning positions than any other Premier League side in this campaign, with 19 points surrendered after leading matches.

The latest victory leaves Brentford in a strong position entering the rest of the Premier League programme. The team have shown resilience on their travels, adjusted to major squad changes and matched Liverpool on points. With Ouattara in form and Andrews satisfied with the group’s development, Brentford carry growing confidence into their upcoming fixtures.
