Mumbai Indians (MI) have been one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, winning five titles and establishing a dynasty of excellence.
Central to this success has been a line of captains who brought experience, aggression, and tactical brilliance to the dugout. From iconic icons in the early years to modern-day leaders, MI's captaincy journey reflects the franchise's evolution from underachievers to five-time champions.
Jasprit Bumrah has now become the 10th Mumbai Indians captain as he leads the Paltans against Punjab Kings in an IPL 2026 match on May 14 in Dharamshala. Before Bumrah, a few stalwarts of the game have led this elite franchise, epitomized by their five IPL titles.
The inaugural 2008 season saw a mix of leadership. Sachin
Tendulkar, the batting maestro, captained MI from 2008 to 2011 in 55 matches, recording 32 wins and guiding the team to the 2010 final. Stand-in captains included Shaun Pollock (4 matches, 3 wins in 2008), Dwayne Bravo (1 match in 2010), and Harbhajan Singh, who led in 30 games across 2008-2012 with 14 victories. Ricky Ponting took charge briefly in the first half of 2013 for 6 matches.
The real transformation came in 2013 when Rohit Sharma was handed the reins. In 163 matches until 2023, Rohit became MI's most successful captain, winning 91 games and delivering five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020). His calm leadership and big-match temperament turned MI into a powerhouse. Kieron Pollard served as stand-in captain in 9 matches (5 wins) between 2014 and 2021.
After Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav captained in 4 matches as stand-in (2023-2026). In 2024, Hardik Pandya took over full-time captaincy. As of May 2026, Hardik has led in 37 matches with 15 wins, reaching the Eliminator in 2025. His dynamic style has brought fresh energy, though results have been mixed in a transitional phase.
