Cristiano Ronaldo is set to be absent from Al-Nassr's upcoming Saudi Pro League fixture against Al-Riyadh on Monday, and reports suggest the decision goes far beyond squad rotation or fitness concerns.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo's omission is not linked to any injury or physical setback. Initial speculation pointed towards precautionary rest ahead of Al-Nassr's crucial clash against title rivals Al Ittihad later this week. However, new details emerging from Portugal indicate a more complex situation unfolding behind the scenes.
Portuguese outlet A Bola has reported that Ronaldo's absence is a deliberate move, rooted in growing dissatisfaction with how Al-Nassr is being managed-particularly in comparison to other clubs backed
by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). The report claims that the Al-Nassr captain is increasingly frustrated with the club's lack of activity in the transfer market, especially during the recently concluded winter window.
While rival clubs have aggressively strengthened their squads, Al-Nassr made just one signing, bringing in 21-year-old midfielder Haydeer Abdulkareem. Requests for additional reinforcements from head coach Jorge Jesus reportedly went unanswered, adding to the sense of stagnation within the club. Ronaldo is believed to view this as a lack of ambition, especially as the team pushes for domestic and continental success.
Adding to the unrest, senior figures within Al-Nassr's hierarchy-sporting director SimÃo Coutinho and CEO Jose Semedo-have allegedly seen their influence reduced following a recent board-level reshuffle. These internal changes are said to have disrupted decision-making and long-term planning.
The situation looks even more stark when compared to Al Hilal, who have been proactive in the transfer market and are reportedly eyeing further marquee signings. Developments elsewhere in the league, including uncertainty around Karim Benzema's future, have further highlighted the contrasting approaches among PIF-backed clubs.
Jorge Jesus previously hinted at financial constraints at Al-Nassr, admitting the club was not in a position to register new foreign players. With tensions now surfacing publicly, Ronaldo's absence may be an early sign of deeper issues at the Riyadh-based club as the season enters a decisive phase.
