Ronald Koeman has expressed confidence in Matthijs de Ligt's return to the Netherlands squad, citing his recent performances for Manchester United. De Ligt has been called up to replace Inter's Stefan
de Vrij for the Netherlands' final World Cup qualifiers against Poland and Lithuania this month. The 26-year-old defender has been instrumental in Manchester United's Premier League campaign, having started all 11 matches this season.
De Ligt has excelled in defensive duties, leading the Premier League with 40 aerial duels won, 59 clearances, and six blocks. His contributions were highlighted by a crucial 96th-minute equaliser against Tottenham, helping his team climb to seventh place in the league standings after 11 games. Koeman noted that De Ligt's improved confidence and performance at the club level were key factors in his selection.
Koeman explained that playing time is a significant consideration when selecting players for the national team. "Although Nathan Ake isn't playing 50% of the [Manchester City] matches, he's part of this squad," Koeman stated. He emphasised that decisions are made individually for each player, and De Ligt's recent form warranted his inclusion.
The Netherlands are currently leading Group G and are poised to secure their spot at next year's World Cup with a win against Poland at Stadion Narodowy. The team remains unbeaten in their last 14 encounters with Poland, having last lost to them in May 1979. This record bolsters their confidence as they aim to qualify for FIFA's premier tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Nathan Ake's Role in the Squad
Nathan Ake's inclusion in the squad is partly due to his left-footedness, which provides balance among predominantly right-footed defenders. Despite limited playing time at Manchester City, Ake remains a vital member of Koeman's team. "Nathan himself is also concerned about the fact that he doesn't play much," Koeman mentioned. However, he values Ake as one of his captains and appreciates his consistent availability when needed.
The Dutch manager highlighted Ake's importance by saying, "He's an important player who has always been there when I've needed him. " This trust underscores Ake's role despite not featuring regularly for his club.
The Netherlands aim to continue their strong form as they approach these crucial qualifiers. With key players like De Ligt and Ake contributing significantly, Koeman is optimistic about their chances of securing a place in the upcoming World Cup.
