The Indian men's football team suffered a significant setback with a 0-1 defeat against Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers held in Dhaka.
This loss confirms India's exit from Asian Cup contention, marking a new low under coach Khalid Jamil. The solitary goal came early in the 10th-11th minute by Bangladesh's Sheikh Morsalin, capitalizing on an instant counterattack after India lost possession in the opponent's half. The Indian side struggled with a dismal first half and defensive lapses, failing to recover despite improved pressure in the second half.
This defeat was India's first loss against Bangladesh in 22 years and added to a winless streak of three FIFA-sanctioned matches under Khalid Jamil. India, ranked 136th by FIFA, has
so far played against Singapore (ranked 155), Hong Kong (148), and Bangladesh (183) in the qualifiers but has failed to secure any victory in five matches, remaining at the bottom of their group with 2 points and a negative goal difference.
The Bangladesh team also had a disappointing qualifier campaign but managed to outplay India on this occasion with key players like Hamza Choudhury making significant defensive contributions.
India's offense lacked sharpness, with their usually leading scorer Sunil Chhetri absent and front-line players like Rahim Ali and Macarton Louis Nickson unable to create decisive chances. The team also faced a lack of regular match practice due to instability in the domestic football calendar and cancellation of the Indian Super League season.
These factors contributed to India's poor form and inability to break their winless streak in this crucial qualification round. The next qualifier against Hong Kong in March 2026 is expected to be a formality given the current standings and India's bleak prospects.
Amid this, the fans and ex-footballers have taken apart the AIFF chief Kalyan Chaubey, along with the players. The Indian football's turmoil regarding ISL has played a big part, as many players have found themselves without adequate practice before coming into the qualifiers. The camp held by head coach Khalid Jamil has clearly proved not enough, and fans have slammed the apex body of Indian football for this downfall.
"Nothing can be more worse than this indian football is keep getting down day by day don't know when the administration will see through our eyes," a fan wrote on X.

Kalyan Chaubey was also at the heart of the wry from the fans, who demand a proper explanation to the current downfall.
"Kalyan chaubey and the so called senior players shud be forced to retire and shunned from Indian NT forever," a fan wrote.
"We are on the roller coaster ride with Kalyan Chaubey as man in control of the it.I have stopped taking Indian football seriously, would suggest that others do the same," said another.
