Getting punched in the face never sounded so appealing, but for former ONE Flyweight MMA World Title challenger Danny Kingad, the raw brutality of combat represents everything he's been missing ahead of his crucial return against Chinese fighter Hu Yong at ONE Fight Night 40 on 14 February.
The Filipino hero from Lions Nation MMA brings an 11-5 ONE record into this must-win Valentine's Day clash. Kingad has lost his previous two fights against current champion Yuya Wakamatsu and former longtime king Adriano Moraes, creating urgency for victory.
Despite the pressure of consecutive losses, Kingad expressed excitement about returning to competition. The Filipino veteran admitted he missed the raw aspects of fighting, from taking punches to earning
battle scars during wars inside the ring.
"Believe it or not, I really missed getting punched in the face. I miss the adrenaline, getting a black eye in a wild fight. I just want that euphoric feeling again. It's those little things," Kingad said.
"I'm feeling nothing but excitement. My last two fights didn't go according to plan, so I'm hungry to redeem myself. I am pushing myself to the limits in training because I badly want to win this fight. Winning is the most important thing for me right now. "
His hunger for redemption has fueled exceptional training camp preparation. The 30-year-old Filipino understands another loss could seriously jeopardize his position within the flyweight division, making this bout critical for his career trajectory.
For the Hu matchup, Kingad enters with realistic expectations. While preferring a spectacular finish, the Team Lions Nation representative anticipates a full three-round battle against the durable Chinese veteran.
"I want a finish, but realistically, I see this one going the full three rounds. I'm not afraid to strike with him, but if there are openings, I will go after those takedowns. It's just a bonus for me if I get to submit him or finish him via ground-and-pound," Kingad said.
