Rick Adelman, a 2021 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and one of the 10 winningest coaches in NBA history, has died at the age of 79, the National Basketball Coaches Association said. Adelman, whose son David Adelman is head coach of the Denver Nuggets, recorded 1,042 regular-season victories, ranking 10th all-time. No cause of death was announced.
Across 23 NBA seasons on the sideline, Adelman shaped teams that consistently reached the playoffs and contended deep into May and June. His teams won 79 postseason games, placing Adelman 14th on the league’s career playoff wins list. His influence stretched from Portland and Sacramento to Houston and Minnesota, covering changing eras and styles.
Adelman’s strongest early coaching
reputation formed with the Portland Trail Blazers, a franchise that first knew Adelman as a player. Portland promoted Adelman from assistant to head coach in February 1989 after Mike Schuler’s dismissal. Over his first three full campaigns, Portland reached the NBA Finals twice behind Clyde Drexler and a balanced, fast-paced attack.
The Trail Blazers fell to the "Bad Boys" Detroit Pistons in the 1990 Finals and then lost to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls in 1992. Portland highlighted Adelman’s impact, stating: "Rick was one of the most influential figures in franchise history, a member of the inaugural 1970 team and integral coach throughout the 80s and 90s, guiding the team toFinals appearances in 1990 and 1992, the Trail Blazers said in a statement. Rick's basketball brilliance helped shape multiple eras of Trail Blazers basketball, earning the respect and admiration of the basketball community and cementing his legacy. His thoughtful leadership, integrity, and kindnessimpactedall those around him on and off the court. "
After two seasons in charge of the Golden State Warriors, Adelman took over the Sacramento Kings in 1998 and oversaw the team’s most successful modern period. The Kings reached the playoffs in all eight seasons under Adelman. Since his departure in 2006, Sacramento has appeared in just one playoff series, highlighting the scale of that earlier run.
The 2001-02 Kings team became Adelman’s signature group. Sacramento finished that regular season 61-21, the best record in franchise history, and pushed the Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in the Western Conference finals. That series, featuring Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, was widely viewed as the toughest hurdle during the Lakers’ championship three-peat.
Adelman later led the Houston Rockets from 2007 to 2011, working with Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and Shane Battier during years of constant tactical adjustment due to injuries and roster changes. Adelman’s final NBA stop came with the Minnesota Timberwolves, where Adelman helped Kevin Love grow into an All-Star and central figure before the forward’s eventual move to Cleveland.
Rick Adelman NBA coach career, playing days and honours
Before coaching, Adelman spent seven seasons as an NBA point guard. Adelman’s best production came with the expansion Portland Trail Blazers between 1970 and 1973, when Adelman averaged 9.8 points and 4.6 assists. That experience as a floor organiser later influenced Adelman’s preference for read-and-react offences, ball movement and smart spacing across his coaching stints.
Adelman entered coaching with Portland as an assistant, spending six seasons learning under Jack Ramsay and Mike Schuler. Those years built the base for Adelman’s later philosophy and prepared Adelman for the mid-season promotion in 1989. Although Adelman never collected the NBA’s Coach of the Year award, Adelman finished second or third in voting five times.
The breadth of Adelman’s career covered several generations of NBA stars and systems. Adelman coached before the ABA-NBA merger and later game-planned against the Miami Heat trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Through changing rules, rising three-point use and shifting roster structures, Adelman’s teams remained competitive and respected, securing Adelman a lasting place in league history.
