Napoli’s chase for the Scudetto takes a hit after a 1-1 draw at Parma, despite Scott McTominay’s equaliser. The midfielder struck on the hour, yet the result leaves Napoli six points behind Serie A leaders Inter, who visit Como later on 12 April 2026.
Parma stunned Napoli almost from kick-off, needing only 33 seconds to go ahead. Zion Suzuki launched a long kick, Nesta Elphege glanced it on, and Gabriel Strefezza sprinted clear before bending a finish beyond Vanja Milinkovic-Savic’s dive. It was Napoli’s fastest league concession since Rodrigo Palacio’s 24-second goal for Bologna in January 2018.
Napoli struggled badly to respond in the first half, with possession bringing few clear sights of goal. Rasmus Hojlund came closest before the break,
directing a header narrowly off target from Kevin De Bruyne’s corner on the stroke of half-time. The visitors walked off frustrated, chasing the game and their Scudetto ambitions.
After the restart, Napoli increased the tempo. Matteo Politano lashed a shot wide from distance as pressure grew. The breakthrough came when Hojlund cushioned Stanislav Lobotka’s first-time pass into McTominay’s path. The midfielder fired low from the right side of the area, beating Suzuki inside the far corner to level on 60 minutes.
The contest stayed open following McTominay’s strike. Alisson Santos almost restored Parma’s lead, hitting the near post from a tight angle. Parma then appealed for a penalty after an Alessandro Buongiorno handball claim, but the officials were unmoved. Tension rose as both teams sensed the match could still swing either way.
Napoli’s defence needed Milinkovic-Savic late on, with the goalkeeper tipping over a fierce drive from Mandela Keita. At the other end, Eljif Elmas squandered a major chance, heading off target from close range. That miss underlined the frustration for Napoli, whose Scudetto hopes appeared to suffer another setback despite dominating long spells.

Napoli Serie A Scudetto hopes underpinned by McTominay numbers and xG data
McTominay’s goal carried extra weight on a personal level. The equaliser meant involvement in a 50th goal across Europe’s top five leagues, with 39 goals and 11 assists. McTominay has now scored in three straight Serie A away matches, marking the midfielder’s best scoring run on the road in Italy.
Statistically, Napoli controlled proceedings after the early blow. The visitors produced 1.21 expected goals, compared with Parma’s 0.19, indicating more and better chances. That imbalance will likely anger coach Antonio Conte, as the team’s slow start undermined an otherwise dominant display which might have yielded three points with sharper finishing.
Conte’s frustration may also stem from the contrast with earlier in the season. Napoli scored after just 13 seconds against Bologna in November, yet Parma have now struck inside the first minute twice this term. It is the first time in the club’s Serie A history that Parma have managed two such early goals in one campaign.
The draw leaves Napoli needing results elsewhere to revive Scudetto hopes, starting with Inter’s visit to Como on 12 April 2026. Parma, meanwhile, take encouragement from another fast start and resilient defending. For Napoli, the numbers highlight control, but the dropped points underline how costly brief lapses can become in a tight title race.
