New Delhi, Oct 24: India will look to strengthen their grip on the five-match T20I series when they take on New Zealand in the second encounter at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The visitors made a statement in the series opener, chasing down a daunting target of 225 with confidence and showcasing their formidable batting depth. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson provided a blistering start, taking full advantage of the powerplay and putting the Kiwi bowlers under immediate pressure. Although India briefly stumbled in the middle overs, losing three wickets for just seven runs, the lower order stepped up at the crucial moment to ensure there were no late hiccups. With momentum firmly on their side, India will be eager to replicate their dominant performance
and move one step closer to sealing the series.
New Zealand, meanwhile, will be keen to bounce back after letting a competitive total slip away in the opening match. Their batters showed plenty of intent, with the opening partnership laying a solid foundation before Glenn Phillips accelerated brilliantly and Bevon Jacobs added valuable runs with a late flourish. However, their inability to contain India's explosive top order proved costly. The hosts also have concerns to address in the field, where missed opportunities allowed the visitors to maintain their advantage during the chase. Phillips and company will need sharper execution with both bat and ball, particularly during the powerplay, to level the series and regain control of the contest.
The conditions at Hagley Oval could once again favour an entertaining, high-scoring encounter, with dew potentially making batting easier under lights. India's superior powerplay approach was a decisive factor in the first T20I, and New Zealand must find a way to restrict the flow of boundaries early on. Both bowling attacks have struggled to keep the scoring rate in check, making discipline and variation crucial in the second game. The toss could also prove significant, with the captain winning it likely to consider bowling first. With India chasing consecutive victories and New Zealand desperate to respond on home soil, another run-filled battle awaits.
New Zealand vs India 2nd T20I Toss Report
Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to field first in the 2nd T20I. "We're going to bowl first. Yes, absolutely. That's one of the reasons (dew being a factor). We have had a little bit of time to recover and catch up on some sleep. Everyone is in decent shape, I would say," Iyer said during the toss.
