Indian athletics icon, Indian Olympic Association president and Rajya Sabha member PT Usha is mourning the loss of her husband, V Srinivasan, who passed away in the early hours of Friday. He was 67.
According
to reports, Srinivasan collapsed at his residence in Perumalpuram, Thikkodi, around 12:30 am. He was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The sudden nature of his demise has sent waves of grief across the sporting fraternity and beyond.
A native of Ponnani in Kerala, Srinivasan had served as a central government employee and later retired from service. Throughout PT Usha's legendary sporting journey and her later role in public life, he remained a steady presence by her side. Those close to the family often described him as a quiet yet influential force who played a significant role in shaping Usha's career and supporting her ambitions.
Srinivasan married PT Usha in 1991. At the time, he was working as an English inspector with the Central Industrial Security Force. Over the years, their partnership became synonymous with mutual support and resilience, with Srinivasan often seen accompanying Usha during key moments of her professional life.
Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke to PT Usha and expressed his sympathy over the loss, acknowledging Srinivasan's contribution as a pillar of strength in her journey. Several leaders, former athletes and sports bodies have also expressed their grief and solidarity with the family.
The couple is survived by their son, Vignesh Ujjwal, who is a doctor by profession. As India's sporting community comes together to mourn the loss, Srinivasan will be remembered not just as the spouse of a national icon, but as a steadfast supporter whose role behind the scenes helped shape one of India's most remarkable sporting careers.
