In a significant blow to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), explosive English opener Phil Salt has returned to the UK for scans on a finger injury that has sidelined him for the last three matches of IPL 2026.
The 29-year-old, centrally contracted by the ECB, flew home at the request of England's management, leaving RCB to manage without their star powerplay aggressor as the league enters its crucial phase.
IPL 2026: Phil Salt returns to UK
Salt sustained the injury during a net session ahead of RCB's clash against Gujarat Titans in late April. Since then, he has missed key fixtures, including matches against GT and Delhi Capitals. RCB mentor Dinesh Karthik had earlier confirmed the cautious approach, stating the team did not want to rush the wicketkeeper-batter back. Jacob Bethell
has filled the opening slot alongside Virat Kohli, but the partnership has lacked the explosive start Salt provided.
Now Salt has returned to UK for scans, leaving his future uncertain for this season. Although Salt's immediate participation is not possible, RCB are still hopeful that the Englishman will return at the latter stage of the tournament.
The Englishman has been pivotal for RCB since joining them ahead of the 2025 season for ₹11.5 crore after a stellar stint with Kolkata Knight Riders. In 2025, he slammed 403 runs at a strike rate of 175.98, helping RCB clinch their maiden IPL title. This season, Salt has scored 202 runs in six innings at an average of 33.67 and a strike rate of 168.33, including a blistering 78 off 36 balls against Mumbai Indians that earned him Player of the Match.
RCB have already acted swiftly by naming Australian opener Jake Fraser-McGurk as Salt's replacement for the remainder of the tournament. The uncapped explosive batter, who went unsold in the mega-auction, arrived in India yesterday and is expected to join the squad immediately. Fraser-McGurk's aggressive style makes him a like-for-like option at the top.
Salt's absence comes at a testing time for the defending champions, who rely heavily on their opening firepower. While scans will determine the extent of the finger damage, potentially a fracture or ligament issue, RCB fans remain hopeful of his return later in the season. England's management will monitor the situation closely, balancing IPL commitments with international duties.
