Russian striker Asadula Imangazaliev won the vacant ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Championship. He beat undefeated Uzbek challenger Aslamjon Ortikov by split decision. The main event took place at The Inner Circle 20 on 26 June at Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium.
Imangazaliev became Russia's first-ever ONE Muay Thai World Champion. The result lifted Russian striking on the global stage. It also gave young fighters in his country a clear example of success.
Imangazaliev explains his approach
In his post-fight interview, Imangazaliev said forward pressure shaped his plan. He stressed steady output and constant engagement. He said the approach helped him beat a dangerous opponent. He also said he did not use his full arsenal.
"My game plan was to keep moving forward and prove that I'm the
best fighter in the world right now. I believe I did exactly that, so the plan worked perfectly. At the same time, I don't think I showed my full arsenal, and I know I have even more to offer, Imangazaliev said.
What comes next
The Russian kept his unbeaten record intact at 13-0. His attacking style created problems for Ortikov during the bout. Imangazaliev said the title meant everything to him. He added that it was only the beginning of his career.
"It means everything to me. I'm incredibly happy that I've achieved that goal. But this is only the beginning. I'm still very young, I still have a lot of work to do, and I truly believe I can become the greatest Muay Thai world champion of all time, he said.
When asked about future rivals, Imangazaliev did not name anyone. He said he never chooses opponents. He added that he will defend the belt against anyone ONE places in front of him.
"Aslamjon can say whatever he wants. I'm the champion now. I've never picked my opponents, and now that I'm the World Champion, I'm definitely not going to start choosing them. Whoever ONE puts in front of me, I'll be ready to defend my belt, Imangazaliev said.
