Kajal Dhochak's silver medal at the World Wrestling Championships marks a significant milestone in her young career. However, former national coach Kuldeep Malik believes the rising Indian wrestler has much more to achieve, with experience, tactical awareness among the key areas that could shape her future.
Kajal Dhochak has announced herself on the senior international stage with a silver medal in the women's 76kg category at the World Wrestling Championships. Although the Indian fell short of gold after an 8-6 defeat against two-time European champion Anastasiya Alpyeyeva in the final, her campaign offered plenty of reasons for optimism.
The young wrestler became only the third Indian woman to win a silver medal at the World Championships, joining
Anshu Malik and Neelam Sirohi on a prestigious list. Her achievement also underlined the growing depth of Indian women's wrestling, with a new generation increasingly capable of challenging established international opponents.
Yet, for Kuldeep Malik, who has been working closely with Kajal in Sonepat, the medal represents both an achievement worth celebrating and an opportunity to aim higher.
Speaking exclusively to myKhel, the former national coach highlighted the significance of the double silver won by Kajal and Neelam while expressing his desire to see India's emerging wrestlers take the next step.
"It is a great achievement that both Kajal and Neelam have won silver medals today. However, I would like to see the upcoming generation of wrestlers turn these silver medals into gold. "
His message reflects the ambition that now surrounds Kajal's career. At a stage when many young wrestlers are still adapting to the demands of senior competition, she has already demonstrated that she can compete with some of the world's leading names.
Kajal's route to the final was anything but straightforward. Competing in a demanding 76kg field, she showed composure, determination and the ability to recover under pressure.
She began her campaign by pinning Lithuania's Kamile Gaucaite before producing a commanding 9-2 victory over Asian champion Enkh Amaryn Davaarnsarn in the quarter-finals.
The semi-final, however, presented a far greater challenge. Facing Kyrgyzstan's Aiperi Medet Kyzy, a two-time World Championships silver medallist, Kajal found herself trailing 1-7 early in the contest. The Indian refused to surrender, responding with four unanswered takedowns to turn the match around and secure her place in the gold-medal bout.
That comeback was one of the defining moments of her championship. It demonstrated her physical capabilities and fighting spirit, while also offering a glimpse of the potential that has helped her rise through the age-group ranks.
The final against Alpyeyeva proved a different test. Kajal fought hard but ultimately lost 8-6, finishing with silver instead of becoming the first Indian woman to win a World Championships gold medal in wrestling.
For Malik, the result also highlighted areas in which the youngster must continue to develop.
While acknowledging Kajal's physical strength, Malik believes that her next stage of development will depend on how effectively she combines that strength with tactical discipline and better decision-making.
"Kajal is a powerful and physically strong wrestler. The mistakes she made today, particularly not attacking in the final moments and not defending well enough, can be attributed to her lack of experience and maturity, as she is still young. This was also her first major international competition. "
The assessment points to a crucial distinction between succeeding in age-group wrestling and consistently winning at the senior level. Physical strength can create opportunities, but the ability to recognise when to attack, protect a lead and respond to an opponent's tactics often determines the outcome of the closest bouts.
Kajal's performance against Alpyeyeva showed that she can compete for the biggest honours. However, the final also provided valuable lessons that could prove important in future international competitions.
Malik's comments are therefore less a criticism of the silver medal than a reminder of the work still required. At her age, learning from a narrow defeat against an experienced European champion could become an important part of her progression.
Kajal's breakthrough at the senior World Championships is the latest chapter in a career that has progressed rapidly through the Indian wrestling system.
She won the U-15 Asian Championships title in 2022 before adding the U-17 Asian crown in 2023. In 2024, she became a U-17 world champion, further establishing herself as one of India's promising young wrestlers. She subsequently secured consecutive gold medals at the Junior World Championships over the next two years.
Her transition to senior wrestling has not been without setbacks. At the Asian Championships, she made her senior debut but suffered a narrow 5-3 defeat against Kazakhstan's Gulmaral Yekerbayeva in her opening bout.
Since then, she has continued to build her reputation through domestic selection contests and international appearances.
The women's 76kg category is among India's competitive wrestling divisions, with several accomplished athletes vying for opportunities to represent the country. Kajal beat two-time junior world champion Priya Malik earlier in the year to secure her place at the Asian Championships. Although she subsequently lost to Priya in the selection trials for the Asian Games, she bounced back to earn a place in the Indian team.
She also defeated Reetika Hooda, a silver medallist at the 2024 Asian Championships, at an informal dangal competition shortly before the World Championships.
These results have strengthened her position in the domestic circuit, but her performance on the world stage represents a different level of progress. Beating established international wrestlers and reaching a World Championships final has shown that she can translate her promise into results against elite opposition.
For Kajal, the silver medal should be viewed as a foundation rather than a finishing point. Her ability to recover from a substantial deficit in the semi-final suggests that she possesses the fighting spirit required at the highest level. The next challenge will be to complement that resilience with greater tactical maturity.
Malik believes that continued development can help her become an even more accomplished wrestler and eventually compete for the biggest prizes in the sport.
"I hope that as she grows older and gains more experience, she will continue to win more medals and make India proud at the Olympic Games. Her mindset and tactical understanding will become stronger with time. At the moment, she relies heavily on her physical strength, but once she learns to combine that strength with better tactical awareness and decision-making, I believe she will achieve even better results. "
The Olympic reference underlines the scale of the ambition surrounding Kajal. Reaching a World Championships final is a significant achievement, but sustaining that level and converting close contests into victories will be essential as she targets future international events.
India has already seen Anshu Malik and Neelam Sirohi reach the World Championships silver-medal podium. Kajal's addition to that list offers another encouraging sign for the country's women's wrestling programme.
Her final defeat may have denied her a historic gold medal, but it has not diminished the importance of her campaign. Instead, it has given the young wrestler experience against elite opposition, a clear indication of her competitive potential and specific areas to address.
For now, Kajal Dhochak leaves the World Championships as a silver medallist with a growing reputation. The task ahead is to turn that breakthrough into sustained success.
As Kuldeep Malik's message makes clear, the next ambition is not simply to reach the podium again, but to climb to its highest step.
