Juventus visit Monaco on Wednesday in the Champions League with qualification secured and pressure eased. Luciano Spalletti wants to see how Juventus handle that change, as the club can still reach the top
eight. Monaco, placed 21st in the league phase, risk going out in the first stage if results elsewhere go against them.
Juventus have 12 points from seven league phase matches, which guarantees a play-off spot. They now chase a place among the top eight seeds. That push continues at Stade Louis-II, where Monaco cannot afford another setback in this campaign.
Monaco’s situation is far more fragile than Juventus’ position. A defeat could see Monaco eliminated if other scores turn hostile. Spalletti expects that pressure to shape Monaco’s approach, with the Ligue 1 side needing to attack rather than wait, which could create spaces for Juventus to use.
Juventus arrive in strong European form after three straight Champions League wins. The victories came against Bodo/Glimt, Pafos and Benfica. Juventus last put together four wins in one Champions League season in 2021-22. Before this current run, Juventus went five matches without a win in the competition, drawing three and losing two.
The historical record in France gives Monaco some encouragement. Juventus have only claimed two wins from 11 away games against French clubs in the European Cup or Champions League. Juventus also drew twice and lost seven times, with both victories coming in the 2016-17 season, including a 2-0 success at Monaco in May 2017.
This fixture revives a familiar Champions League pairing. Monaco and Juventus last met in the 2016-17 semi-finals. Juventus won both legs, 2-0 away and 2-1 in Turin, and advanced to the final. That memory underlines Juventus’ past success at Stade Louis-II, despite the wider record in France.
Domestic form also boosts Juventus before the trip. Spalletti’s side beat Scudetto holders Napoli 3-0 on Sunday. That result moved Juventus to within one point of Serie A’s top four. Spalletti now wants to see how Juventus perform when the need for points is less urgent in Europe.
"There is no better way to prove our current form, assured Spalletti in his press conference and on Sky Sport Italia. We do not have the tension of needing a result, so let's see what we can do when we are free mentally. Monaco won't be making calculations, they cannot afford to sit back and wait, while we are playing to win, to aspire to something more. I expect an open and entertaining game against a strong opponent. "
Spalletti plans significant rotation after the demanding domestic schedule. Juventus faced Napoli two days before the Monaco tie and play again two days later. Spalletti indicated that fitness, workload and the secure qualification status will all influence his squad choices for this game in the principality.
"We played two days ago and will play again two days after that, so there will be a few adjustments, Spalletti revealed. I can say that Koopmeiners will play in midfield, while Bremer and Gatti need to be evaluated for their fitness levels. Openda is going to start upfront. If I give him space, he should be able to sort out this difficulty he has in scoring goals. I am curious to see how this team fares without that anxiety of needing a result at all costs. We are in the best possible situation, in the Champions League without feeling the pressure of three obligatory points. I'll make a few changes, yes, but I still want to see a high level of performance. "

The Juventus coach also faced questions about comments made after beating Antonio Conte’s Napoli. Spalletti had referred to Napoli as the former champions of Italy, which drew attention. The subject returned during the Champions League media duties before the Monaco meeting.
"I thought it was AI, then I realised it was real. I had hoped you would ask me different things in a Champions League press conference, laughed Spalletti. "
Juventus therefore approach Monaco with momentum, a secure position in the standings and room to experiment. Monaco need victory to avoid relying on other results. The mix of Juventus’ relaxed mindset and Monaco’s urgency points towards the open contest Spalletti expects at Stade Louis-II.
