India's preparations for the high-voltage ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Pakistan have suffered a potential setback, with star opener Abhishek Sharma likely to remain unavailable. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav provided a concerning update on Abhishek's fitness ahead of India's Group A encounter against Namibia in New Delhi.
Speaking after the toss, Suryakumar confirmed that the explosive batter is yet to recover fully from his illness. "Abhishek is still not fine; he will miss a game or two. Sanju comes in, similar batter, explosive," Surya said. His statement has raised doubts over Abhishek's availability for India's much-anticipated match against Pakistan in Colombo on February 15.
In Abhishek's absence, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju
Samson was drafted into the playing XI for the Namibia fixture. The Kerala cricketer is set to open the innings alongside Ishan Kishan, providing India with a powerful top-order combination. Samson has been in good touch during practice sessions and is expected to play a crucial role if given an extended run in the tournament.
Abhishek's absence comes as a significant blow for India, especially considering his recent form and impact at the top of the order. The World No. 1 T20I batter had already been struggling with health issues during India's opening match against the United States. Despite battling a viral fever, he chose to feature in the game. However, his condition worsened after the team reached Delhi, where he was diagnosed with a stomach infection and subsequently admitted to hospital.
Following medical evaluation, Abhishek was discharged, but his recovery remains under close observation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also issued a statement regarding his health, stating, "Abhishek Sharma is still recovering from his illness and was unavailable for selection. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his progress. "
Meanwhile, Namibia won the toss and opted to bowl first in the Delhi clash. Suryakumar revealed that India would have preferred batting first as well, suggesting the team was comfortable with the surface conditions.
As India continues its World Cup campaign, the team management will be hoping for positive updates on Abhishek's fitness, particularly with the crucial encounter against Pakistan fast approaching.
