Derby County ended their three-game winless streak with a decisive 3-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday. John Eustace, Derby's manager, believed his team should have secured a more substantial lead by half-time. Despite this, he was relieved to see them return to form. The Rams had slipped down the standings after earning just one point in their previous three matches.
Patrick Agyemang was instrumental in Derby's success, scoring both before and after the break. Liam Thompson also found the net early in the second half, helping Derby climb back into the top half of the table. The Rams dominated the match with 15 shots compared to Wednesday's three and achieved an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.64 against Wednesday's 0.18.
Eustace noted that Derby
created significant chances during transitions in the first half but failed to capitalise fully due to poor finishing or final passes. "I thought in the first half we got some really good opportunities, especially in the transitions, and we were very sloppy," Eustace told reporters. He felt that with better execution, they could have secured a commanding lead by halftime.
In contrast, Derby improved their performance in the second half, controlling the game more effectively and converting their chances into goals. Eustace expressed satisfaction with the team's ability to finish their opportunities and secure a comprehensive win.
Sheffield Wednesday remains without a home win this season and is 29 points away from safety after having 18 points deducted earlier. Their manager, Henrik Pedersen, was disappointed with his team's inability to replicate their performance from last week's 1-1 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road.
"We delivered really well at Watford, but we didn't reach the same levels today," Pedersen said. He acknowledged that while they started well and controlled early play, losing possession easily led to Derby's first goal. After conceding again for 2-0, Pedersen felt the game was effectively over.
The victory sees Derby County regain momentum as they aim for higher league positions. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday faces an uphill battle to improve their standing amidst ongoing challenges this season.
