Ronald Koeman confirmed that Jeremie Frimpong left the pitch injured as Netherlands drew 1-1 with Ecuador. Netherlands had gone ahead through a third-minute own goal by Willian Pacho, but Denzel Dumfries received a straight red card nine minutes later. Enner Valencia equalised from the penalty spot, and Koeman’s side then focused on surviving with ten players.
Frimpong, who has already suffered three muscle injuries for Arne Slot’s Liverpool side this season, came on at half-time but lasted only 14 minutes. The right-back then asked to come off, which Koeman later said forced a change of plans for the second half against Ecuador.
Koeman did not specify the nature of Frimpong’s latest problem, but admitted the substitution hurt his tactical options.
"That was a blow, we had to substitute him," Koeman told NOS of Frimpong's injury. The incident adds another concern for Netherlands, with the national coach already worried about the overall condition of several important players.
Koeman has been dealing with a growing injury list during this international period. Jurrien Timber, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay all missed the Ecuador match because of separate fitness issues. The coach suggested that these absences, added to Frimpong’s setback, limit his ability to test different combinations before the next major tournament.
The red card shown to Dumfries changed the rhythm of the match and reduced Netherlands’ attacking threat. Koeman’s team managed only two shots across the whole game. Ecuador produced 17 efforts in response, but Netherlands restricted them well, allowing just three attempts on target despite playing with ten players for more than 80 minutes.
Koeman felt the team adapted well to the numerical disadvantage and treated it like a rehearsal for tournament football. "You want to finish with eleven against eleven," Koeman said of the performance. "But on the other hand, it was a scenario you might also encounter at a major tournament. Then you have to go for the result together. I thought that went very well throughout the entire second half. "
Despite the setbacks, Koeman stressed that many aspects across the March international window pleased the technical staff. "I saw good things again. Throughout the entire international period, in fact," Koeman added. "The way the group interacted with each other was very good. It is not even that I have a definitive idea in my head which 26 they will be. But there are quite a few I have clarity on. There are also points of discussion. And we have to wait and see regarding the players' fitness. Only eight weeks left, but above all, I hope that everyone stays fit. And that I have to make difficult choices. That is what I am the national coach for. "
Koeman again underlined the importance of having the strongest group available when the squad of 26 is named. "We are in a good position with Oranje, I do think so. However, we need to be fit and complete; we know that. We were missing three starting players with some extras: Jurrien Timber, Frenkie de Jong, and Memphis Depay. The overall fitness of a number of guys could also be a bit better. I think we are in a good position, but you can't be certain. "
Netherlands leave the meeting with Ecuador encouraged by their resilience but worried about mounting health concerns. The draw showed defensive discipline with ten players, yet highlighted how quickly injuries and suspensions can stretch the squad. With eight weeks before the next selection deadline, Koeman’s main focus remains improving fitness levels across the group.
