New Delhi: The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has laid out a clear and uncompromising selection roadmap for the 2026 Asian Games, making it evident that consistent performance, regular competition, and the ability to peak at the right time will determine India's athletics squad.
Interacting with the media in New Delhi, AFI spokesperson Adil Sumariwala said the federation's approach is aimed at ensuring fairness and preparedness rather than rewarding isolated performances. "We have made it very clear that selection will be based on performances across the season and not on one competition or one exceptional result," Sumariwala said.
He explained that the qualification standards announced ahead of the domestic season will act as the foundation
of the selection process, but not a guarantee of selection. "The qualification mark is the entry point. It shows that an athlete has the ability to compete at the Asian level, but it does not automatically mean selection," he said.
Sumariwala underlined the growing importance of state meets and domestic competitions, stressing that regular participation is essential for selection. "State meets are extremely important. Athletes must compete, stay match-fit, and show consistency. We cannot select athletes who compete once and disappear," he said.
According to AFI, domestic competitions offer selectors a clearer picture of an athlete's technical stability, tactical awareness, and mental strength. Sumariwala pointed out that competing regularly also helps athletes handle pressure situations. "Competition temperament cannot be judged in training. It comes only when you compete again and again," he added.
A major focus of AFI's selection philosophy, Sumariwala said, is ensuring athletes peak closer to the Asian Games rather than too early in the season. "Peaking at the right time is crucial. Performing very well early in the year does not help if you cannot deliver at the Asian Games," he said. "We want athletes who are in top form when the Games are held. "
He further explained that performances closer to the Games will carry greater weight during selection. "The Asian Games is the target. Naturally, performances nearer to the event give us a better idea of readiness," Sumariwala said.
Addressing concerns over selection disputes, the AFI spokesperson was categorical that the selection committee's decision will be final. "Once the selection committee evaluates all factors and takes a decision, that decision will be final. There has to be clarity and discipline in the system," he said.
