When global sporting icons cross paths, it usually results in mutual admiration. However, it is incredibly rare to see one legendary athlete credit another for sparking their interest in an entirely different sport. That is exactly what happened when 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic recently opened up about his relationship with Indian cricket maestro Virat Kohli.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Laureus World Sports Awards during the red-carpet interaction, the Serbian tennis legend dropped a massive revelation regarding his connection to cricket, proving once again that Kohli's influence extends far beyond the 22-yard pitch.
Djokovic was asked about his bond with the former Indian cricket captain. The tennis great did not hold back
his admiration, cementing the fact that their relationship is built on deep mutual respect and a shared champion's mentality.
"Yes, Virat is a friend and someone I, of course, respect and admire," Djokovic stated.
But it was his next admission that caught the sporting world by surprise. Djokovic confessed that his entire interest in the sport of cricket is solely down to the modern-day batting great.
"He's actually, to be honest, the reason why I started following cricket. I hadn't followed it before, but through him, I started following it more," he revealed.
The organic friendship between Djokovic and Kohli dates back a few years, famously starting with a simple exchange of Instagram direct messages. Since then, the two have continuously congratulated each other on their respective milestones, from Kohli's historic 50th ODI century during the World Cup to Djokovic's record-breaking Grand Slam triumphs.
Djokovic emphasized that the two have stayed connected and discussed the highly anticipated prospect of meeting up in Kohli's home country.
"We keep in touch, and hopefully, when I come. I don't want to say if, but when I come to India, he can join me," he said.
Playing Tennis and Cricket Together?
Fans of both superstars might soon be treated to the ultimate crossover event. Expanding on his plans for his eventual trip to India, Djokovic painted a heartwarming picture of what a hangout between the two legends might look like, bridging the gap between their two massive sports.
"We could play a little bit of tennis and a little bit of cricket, have fun, and just spread positive vibes while celebrating sport," the tennis star shared with a warm smile.
The "Calling" to Visit India
Djokovic, who last visited India over a decade ago for an exhibition match in New Delhi, also took the time to express his deep gratitude toward his massive Indian fanbase. He acknowledged the unwavering support he receives from the subcontinent and hinted that a highly anticipated trip is imminent.
"My message is always love, respect, and appreciation for, first of all, all the support over the years that I personally have been receiving from all the Indian tennis fans and Indian sports fans around the world," Djokovic explained.
He enthusiastically added: "And my message would also be 'See you very soon in India because I need to go to India. I've been feeling a calling to come for the last couple of years. "
