However, statistics can sometimes conceal broader trends. Alongside the centuries and match-winning knocks have come several low scores. Innings of 1, 2, 8, 11, 14, 15, 20, 24 and 26 suggest that consistency has become harder to maintain.

The Afghanistan series may not carry the intensity of an ICC tournament or a major bilateral contest against Australia or England, but it arrives at an important moment in India's evolution. The team is transitioning towards a younger core under Gill's leadership while simultaneously attempting to maximise the contributions of experienced players.

Rohit occupies the intersection of those two objectives. His experience remains invaluable. His batting remains capable of winning matches. But India also need reassurance that he can maintain those standards consistently over the next two years.

The discussion surrounding Rohit Sharma should not be framed as a debate about retirement or decline.
