India's wrestling team for the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya isn't the same squad that qualified through the national trials back in May. A Doping Crisis That Gutted Three Weight Categories
The buildup to these Games has been overshadowed by a run of doping cases that forced the Wrestling Federation of India to strip three athletes from the squad entirely. Deepak Punia, originally selected in the men's 97kg freestyle category, tested positive for clomiphene - becoming the third doping case tied to this squad. He joins Mukul Dahiya (men's 86kg freestyle) and Deepanshu Ahlawat (men's 130kg Greco-Roman), both already disqualified before him.
The fallout is stark: India will have no representatives at all in the freestyle 86kg and 97kg categories, or in Greco-Roman 130kg, at these Games. The WFI has argued that earlier notification of the positive tests could have allowed replacements to be entered before final Asian Games submissions closed - a complaint that speaks to how late in the process these cases emerged.
