Brighton chase European qualification while Manchester United travel to the south coast already secure in third. Bruno Fernandes enters the final Premier League round level with the single-season assists record, under scrutiny from Roy Keane. Brighton still have an outside chance of reaching the Champions League, adding further tension to a fixture that rarely ends quietly.
United cannot move from third and have guaranteed Champions League football next season, so focus shifts. Fernandes seeks at least one more assist against Brighton to move clear of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. For Brighton, the contest could decide whether Fabian Hurzeler’s team step onto Europe’s main stage for the first time.
Brighton sit seventh, three points adrift
of Bournemouth, and can still mathematically climb to sixth. That position may bring Champions League football if Aston Villa win the Europa League final against Freiburg and finish fifth domestically. Brighton must also beat United, hope Bournemouth lose at Nottingham Forest, Liverpool defeat Brentford, and Aston Villa fall against Manchester City.
Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat away to Leeds United damaged Brighton’s control over their destiny. Bournemouth’s midweek draw against Manchester City allowed Andoni Iraola’s side to lock in a European place. Brighton now depend on several results across England and Europe, while knowing victory over United remains the first non‑negotiable requirement.
Fernandes recorded his 20th Premier League assist of the campaign in United’s recent win against Nottingham Forest. That haul equals the current record jointly held by Henry from 2002-03 and De Bruyne from 2019-20. One more assist at Brighton would see Fernandes move outright top of the single-season list.

Keane, the former United captain, criticised Fernandes’ open talk about chasing the mark. Keane suggested the Portugal international resembled a circus act and accused Fernandes of placing personal recognition above collective achievement. The comments did not unsettle Fernandes, who insisted his mindset remains based on team success rather than statistics.
Asked about Keane’s remarks, Fernandes delivered a detailed defence of his approach. "It is not something that I will ever chase. I know people can have different opinions about me, but they cannot say that I am not someone that looks to [help] the team and tries to make the team the most successful one. I will always try to win trophies and not individual accolades. "
Brighton vs Manchester United players to watch and milestones
Danny Welbeck enters the game having been named Brighton’s Players’ Player of the Year by team-mates. "I think we've put in a lot of hard work throughout the season, and to be recognised by your team-mates is always very special. I am privileged for that honour," Welbeck said. Against former club United, Welbeck has scored eight goals in all competitions, his joint-best return versus any side.
"It's been a good season, we've still got an important game on Sunday, but let's hope it can be even better. Let's make sure we can make some incredible memories. " If selected, Welbeck will make a 400th Premier League appearance, becoming the 46th player to reach that landmark, underlining long service in English football.
For United, attention also falls on Bryan Mbeumo after the forward ended an 11-match league goal drought at Forest. This is Mbeumo’s first season at Old Trafford, and the attacker has often delivered against Brighton. Across previous league meetings, Mbeumo has contributed five goals and three assists, all produced across his last five starts versus the Seagulls.
Brighton vs Manchester United prediction and Opta probabilities
Historically, this fixture produces decisive results. None of the 17 Premier League meetings between these sides have ended level, with United winning nine and Brighton eight. Brighton hold the highest win rate against United of any club in Premier League history, both overall at 47% and at home with 63% across eight matches.
However, Brighton’s record on the final day is mixed, with five defeats from eight previous Premier League seasons. That sequence includes a 2-0 home loss to United in 2023-24. Hurzeler’s team now seek a first run of four consecutive top-flight home victories, having previously seen five of six similar streaks broken in the next game.
Michael Carrick’s United side aim to complete a league double over Brighton for the first time since 2020-21. Recent history favours Brighton, who have claimed six wins from the last eight league clashes, losing the other two. Yet United are historically strong on the final day, winning 23 such matches, a tally exceeded only by Arsenal with 24.
United have also lost the fewest final Premier League games among clubs with at least 20 seasons, suffering four defeats. The Opta supercomputer still gives Brighton a greater chance of victory at the Amex Stadium. Model projections show a home win as the most likely outcome, with a draw and away success rated less probable.
The match brings together Brighton’s complex quest for Champions League qualification and United’s statistical pursuits. Fernandes’ bid for an assists record, Welbeck’s milestone appearance, and Mbeumo’s strong record against Brighton add further layers. With neither club usually involved in draws in this fixture, another decisive result would fit the established pattern.
