Arsenal ended the calendar year five points clear of Manchester City after a 4-1 home win over Aston Villa, with Gabriel Jesus stressing the squad’s mentality as the main factor. The result keeps Arsenal top of the Premier League for a seventh year-end, matching Liverpool and Manchester United.
The scoreline was also notable historically. The 4-1 success was the largest winning margin in a Premier League match between teams starting the day inside the top three since Manchester City beat Arsenal in April 2023. Manchester City now host Sunderland on New Year’s Day, aiming to close the gap.
Jesus scored Arsenal’s fourth goal and also ended a personal drought, with this his first strike since January 1. The forward felt the performance showed a team
developing a strong mindset across the season, especially against a Villa side that tried to disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm at Emirates Stadium.
Jesus told Sky Sports how the match felt from the pitch. "I think it was amazing. It's always hard to play against them. They have brilliant players," Jesus told Sky Sports. "They come here all the time, they hurt us. And it was clear early in the game they were trying to delay the game. Everyone could see that. The mentality of the team is really, really growing and each game is growing even more and I think we are winning today because of the mentality. "

The game was tight before half-time, but momentum shifted when Gabriel Magalhaes struck from a corner. Bukayo Saka’s delivery caused problems for Emiliano Martinez, whose error allowed Gabriel Magalhaes to turn the ball in. It was Gabriel Magalhaes’ first Premier League start since November and again highlighted Arsenal’s strength at set-pieces.
Gabriel Magalhaes reached 19 Premier League goals for Arsenal with that finish. Since Gabriel Magalhaes’ debut in September 2020, no defender has scored more league goals. Only Laurent Koscielny, with 22, has more Premier League goals for Arsenal among defenders overall, underlining how often Gabriel Magalhaes contributes in the opposition box.
| Arsenal defender | Premier League goals |
|---|---|
| Laurent Koscielny | 22 |
| Gabriel Magalhaes | 19 |
Jesus praised Gabriel Magalhaes’ effect on the backline and linked it to the broader Arsenal mentality. "I said after the last game when they asked me about him [Gabriel], the moment he stepped on the pitch you could see the difference of our backline," Jesus added. "The way we defend. He loves to defend the way I love to attack and he loves to score goals as well. "
Arsenal now carry a five-point advantage into the new year, with both attack and defence contributing. The display against Aston Villa showed control in a tight first half and greater composure later. For Jesus, the evolving mentality within the squad remains central as the Premier League title race continues.
