International javelin thrower Annu Rani and her husband Sahil Bhardwaj, a national kickboxing champion, have found themselves in legal trouble after firing celebratory shots during their wedding ceremony in Sardhana, Meerut.
The event, which took place on the evening of November 18, was marred by a viral video showing the couple discharging a double-barreled gun on stage during the jaimala ritual.
The firing of shots is considered illegal under Indian firearm laws unless specifically permitted. Following the circulation of the video on social media, local police promptly registered an FIR against the couple under the Arms Act and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to reckless endangerment. An official police investigation has been
initiated to verify the type of firearm used and assess the circumstances of its usage.
Annu Rani is a celebrated athlete who has represented India internationally in javelin throw, winning prestigious medals including gold at the 2023 Asian Games. Her husband Sahil Bhardwaj is equally notable in national kickboxing circuits. The wedding was a high-profile event attended by sports personalities and local dignitaries.
While celebratory firing is traditionally part of many Indian ceremonies, its legal and safety implications have led to increased scrutiny, highlighted by this incident. Authorities caution against such acts due to the potential risks they pose to public safety.
The incident has sparked debate on social media, with many urging greater awareness about firearm safety and the need for responsible celebrations even during joyous occasions such as weddings.
Annu Rani and Sahil Bhardwaj now await the outcome of the ongoing investigation, which will determine further legal proceedings. The duo have been booked for their celebratory firings and legal steps can be taken against them.
MyKhel contacted with a personnel from Sardhana Police Station who confirmed the incident, stating that they are probing into the entire incident.
"We are probing against them, and an FIR has been lodged against both. It happened during their wedding," a police officer told MyKhel.
When asked about whether the gun used for the firing has been captured, the police personnel said the matter is under investigation.
"It is a matter of investigation, we can't say anything beyond that for now," he said.
