Real Madrid missed direct qualification for the Champions League round of 16 after a 4-2 defeat to Benfica, despite leading scorer Kylian Mbappe. The late collapse left Alvaro Arbeloa critical of the display, stating: "We've fallen short of our potential, of meeting the demands of our opponents, the atmosphere, and what was at stake," said Arbeloa.
The match ended in dramatic fashion. Madrid, reduced to nine players after red cards for Raul Asencio and Rodrygo, pushed for an equaliser while trailing 3-2 in stoppage time. Instead, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin headed in Benfica's fourth goal in the 98th minute, confirming Madrid's slip into the play-offs.
Trubin's contribution added a rare note in Champions League history. The Ukrainian became
the fifth goalkeeper to score in the competition, joining Jorg Butt, Sinan Bolat, Vincent Enyeama, and Ivan Provedel. The header was also Trubin's first-ever touch in the opposition half in a Champions League fixture.

Mbappe still set new marks for Madrid in European competition. The forward scored twice, reaching 12 and then 13 Champions League goals for the season. That return is the highest by any Madrid player in a group or league-phase campaign, moving past Cristiano Ronaldo's 11 goals from the 2015-16 season.
Mbappe's second statistic on the night came away from home. The France international now has nine away goals in this Champions League season. That total equals the record for a single campaign, matching Ronaldo's 2013-14 tally and Robert Lewandowski's output during the 2019-20 season.
Real Madrid Champions League path and Mourinho factor
The defeat means Madrid finish ninth in the new league phase standings. That position sends Madrid into a play-off tie for a place in the last 16. Madrid will now face either Bodo/Glimt or a swift rematch with Jose Mourinho's Benfica, depending on the draw outcome.
Mourinho also achieved a personal landmark against his former club. The Benfica coach claimed a first career victory over Madrid at the sixth attempt. Before this match, Madrid had been the opponent Mourinho had encountered most often without ever managing to secure a win.
Key match numbers highlighted the mix of individual success and collective frustration for Madrid.

After the match, Arbeloa expanded on Madrid's performance issues and took personal responsibility. "We haven't been able to perform at our best for 90 minutes. We knew we had a lot of work to do; we're aware there's still much to be done. We have to look ahead. To win these matches, you have to do many things well for 90 minutes. I knew the level of the opponent and their coach. I told the players as much. I wasn't able to get the players to perform at the level I wanted. If the team doesn't perform at that level, the responsibility is always mine. I wasn't able to get them to approach the match the way I wanted. "
Madrid now move into the play-off stage knowing Mbappe is in leading form, yet also aware of defensive lapses and disciplinary problems that proved costly in Portugal. The next opponent, whether Bodo/Glimt or Benfica again, will test how quickly Madrid can address those issues.
