After a roller-coaster IPL 2025 campaign, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) find themselves at a crucial crossroads as they prepare for the upcoming IPL 2026 mini-auction.
The franchise, which entered the previous
season as one of the favourites after finishing runners-up in 2024, endured a disappointing run that saw them end sixth on the points table-far below expectations considering their firepower.
Despite boasting a star-studded lineup featuring Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, and Ishan Kishan, the team struggled for rhythm and consistency throughout the season. SRH began the campaign strongly but their momentum fizzled out midway, with key players failing to deliver in crunch moments. By the time they managed a string of wins toward the latter stages, qualification hopes had already faded.
Shami's Future Under Scrutiny
One of the biggest questions facing SRH heading into the auction revolves around Mohammed Shami. The experienced pacer was signed for a massive ₹10 crore at the 2025 mega-auction, making him one of the team's most expensive acquisitions. However, the veteran failed to live up to expectations, claiming only six wickets in nine matches at an alarming economy rate of 11.23 - the worst among SRH's frontline pacers who played at least five matches.
His underwhelming returns have raised serious doubts about his future with the franchise. With Shami struggling for rhythm and battling recurring injury concerns, SRH's management could be tempted to release him to free up funds and target a younger, fitter pace option at the mini-auction.
India Snub and Domestic Stint
Adding to the uncertainty is Shami's recent exclusion from the Indian squad, which may further impact his IPL prospects. Although he remains active in the domestic circuit, his lack of international exposure in recent months could work against him, especially in a tournament as demanding as the IPL.
Still, Shami's vast experience and proven track record make him a valuable asset if he can regain full fitness. The coming weeks will reveal whether SRH choose to persist with the seasoned campaigner or opt for a fresh face to bolster their pace attack.
For now, the big question looms large - will Sunrisers Hyderabad take a gamble on Shami once more, or will the 2026 auction mark the end of his SRH chapter?
