Manchester United stayed in the Premier League top four after a 1-1 draw with West Ham, secured by Benjamin Sesko’s 96th-minute equaliser at London Stadium, while West Ham remained 18th, missing the chance to pull level on points with Nottingham Forest.
West Ham were frustrated by that late goal, as Tomas Soucek’s earlier strike seemed enough to hand Michael Carrick a first defeat since returning to Old Trafford, before Sesko again delivered deep into stoppage time to rescue United and extend Carrick’s unbeaten league start.
The decisive late moment came when Bryan Mbeumo swung in a cross from the left, and Benjamin Sesko drifted into space, guiding a controlled finish past Senne Lammens with one minute of stoppage time remaining, repeating the kind
of late impact already shown against Fulham.
Earlier, West Ham had gone ahead five minutes after the restart, when Luke Shaw was caught out of position on United’s left, allowing Jarrod Bowen to drive a low cross into the area from the right, which Soucek cleverly diverted through Lammens’ legs from close range.
The first half brought few clear openings, though Crysencio Summerville tested Lammens from a promising situation, and another major chance saw Shaw’s effort beaten away near the line by former Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who reacted sharply to preserve parity before the interval.
Casemiro, making a 150th appearance for Manchester United, thought an equaliser had arrived shortly after the hour when a powerful header found the net, but the assistant’s flag and a marginal offside decision cancelled the goal following a tight check, increasing United’s frustration in attack.
Stoppage time then produced more drama, as Joshua Zirkzee glanced a header wide for United, before West Ham countered at speed and substitute Callum Wilson went through one-on-one, only for Lammens to stand firm and block, moments before Sesko struck with the contest’s final meaningful action.
There was also personal history for Soucek, whose goal was his 39th in the Premier League, moving the midfielder clear of Patrik Berger as the highest-scoring Czech player in the competition, a notable milestone even as West Ham dropped more vital points in their relegation battle.

The match again highlighted Manchester United’s struggle to create clear opportunities, as they produced only nine shots, worth 0.63 expected goals, and this was just the second time in this league campaign they registered fewer than 10 attempts, after managing five against Tottenham in September.
For Carrick, the pattern of late goals has continued from playing days to coaching, with Sesko scoring a stoppage-time winner against Fulham earlier in Carrick’s tenure, and this equaliser at 95:11 becoming the latest result-changing goal West Ham have conceded at home in Premier League records since 2006-07.
That late setback added to a worrying trend for West Ham, who have now dropped 20 points from winning positions in this league season, a figure that keeps the team two points behind Nottingham Forest in the table and underlines how costly late lapses have become in their survival fight.
