New Delhi, June 1: Indian football fans can finally mark their calendars with certainty. After months of speculation and uncertainty, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) has secured the broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India, ensuring that football's biggest spectacle will be available on television and digital platforms across the country.
The agreement, announced on Monday (june 1), also includes rights for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup and a host of other FIFA tournaments until 2034.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be broadcast on ZEEL's newly launched sports channels - Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2 and Unite8 Sports 2 HD.
Fans will also be able to stream matches live on Zee5.
The announcement ends a prolonged period of uncertainty that had made India one of the last major markets where FIFA had not finalised a broadcast partner for its flagship tournament.
Why Was There A Delay?
Unlike the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which enjoyed prime-time viewing hours for Indian audiences, the 2026 edition presents a significant challenge for broadcasters.
With the tournament being played across North America, a majority of matches will be held between midnight and 6 AM IST. Out of the 104 matches scheduled in the expanded 48-team tournament, nearly 90 per cent are expected to fall within those overnight hours.
The unfavourable timings reduced the commercial appeal of the tournament, especially given India's absence from the competition. Reports suggested that negotiations between FIFA and JioStar stalled because of differences over the valuation of the rights package.
FIFA had reportedly sought close to $100 million for the combined rights of the 2026 and 2030 World Cups, while broadcasters were unwilling to match those expectations due to concerns over advertising revenue.
Industry reports indicate that Zee eventually secured the package for approximately $35 million, although the financial details were not disclosed officially.
FIFA Sees India As A Key Growth Market
Despite the challenges posed by time zones, FIFA remains optimistic about football's future in India.
"The Indian market is of strategic importance for FIFA as it displays immense potential driven by a young and passionate audience. We believe the extensive broadcast and digital distribution ecosystem of 'Z' coupled with their deep understanding of local viewers and multi-platform capabilities will play a pivotal role in expanding the reach of football with fans across every part of India," FIFA Chief Business Officer Romy Gai said.
The deal was announced just weeks after China's CCTV also secured rights for the upcoming World Cup, leaving India as one of the final major territories awaiting a broadcast agreement.
More Than Just The World Cup
The partnership covers 39 FIFA events and significantly strengthens Zee's return to sports broadcasting.
Apart from the men's FIFA World Cups in 2026 and 2030, the broadcaster will also air:
- FIFA Women's World Cup 2027
- FIFA Men's U-17 World Cups (2026-2034)
- FIFA Women's U-17 World Cups (2026-2034)
- FIFA U-20 Men's World Cups (2027, 2029, 2031, 2033)
- FIFA U-20 Women's World Cups (2026, 2028, 2030, 2032, 2034)
- FIFA Futsal Men's World Cups (2028, 2032)
- FIFA Futsal Women's World Cups (2029, 2033)
- FIFA Intercontinental Cup (2026-2030)
The agreement also includes FIFA documentary and original content.
Zee's Big Football Bet
The acquisition represents one of the biggest investments in football broadcasting in India in recent years.
ZEEL CEO Punit Goenka described the move as a long-term commitment to the sport. "We are excited to bring one of the world's biggest sporting spectacles to Indian audiences. Football cuts across regions and demographics, and the investments in garnering the media rights and launching dedicated sports channels reflect our clear belief in its long-term potential," Goenka said.
With the largest FIFA World Cup in history now set to be available on Indian screens, football fans can finally look forward to the countdown to 2026 without worrying about where they will watch the action unfold.
