Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana is ready to turn a new page in his IPL journey after being signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the 2026 season. The 23-year-old attracted major attention
at the auction, where KKR secured his services for ₹18 crore. This came after he was released by the Chennai Super Kings, who surprisingly stayed out of the bidding altogether.
Following the auction, Pathirana posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, bidding an emotional goodbye to CSK. Looking back on his time with the franchise, he credited the team for shaping both his career and character.
"From a boy with a dream to wearing yellow with pride. CSK gave me more than just cricket it gave me belief, confidence, and a family I will always cherish," wrote Pathirana.
Pathirana also spoke warmly about the guidance he received from MS Dhoni and the support system within the team.
"I am forever grateful to Dhoni bhai for the guidance and trust, Kasi sir and the management for believing in me, my teammates for standing by me like brothers, and every loyal CSK fan who supported me through every high and low," he added.
The pacer admitted his disappointment at not reaching the 50-wicket mark for CSK but stressed that his effort and intent were always genuine. In his closing lines, he wrote:
"Chennai will always have a special place in my heart. With respect, gratitude, and pride, I now turn the page and begin a new chapter with KKR. "
Pathirana made his IPL debut in 2022 and enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2023, claiming 19 wickets in 12 matches and playing a vital role in CSK's championship run. He followed it up with 13 wickets from six games in 2024. However, a modest 2025 season led to his release ahead of the 2026 auction. Now in KKR colours, the young pacer will aim to revive his form and make a strong impact in the upcoming IPL season.
