Lucknow Super Giants speedster Avesh Khan is likely to be banned for 1-match for infringing the ICC rules during the IPL match against SRH. Although the umpires have not taken a firm decision on the same, it will be disastrous for the bowling lineup of the franchise if they miss the services of Avesh Khan.
The controversy erupted in the penultimate ball of the over when Avesh Khan, who was near the boundary rope, wearing his batting pads, struck the ball even before it crossed the boundary, while celebrating the win. Fellow LSG cricketer Arshin Kulkarni raised his hands in disbelief after his action.
As per the laws of cricket, interference by a non-fielder results in a dead-ball and can lead to a five-run penalty. Had the penalty been enforced,
Lucknow Super Giants would have required six runs from the final two deliveries. However, no appeal was made by Sunrisers Hyderabad regarding the incident.

🚨AVESH KHAN MAY FACE 1-MATCH BAN🚨
During the last match between Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad, Avesh Khan hit the ball with his bat before it reached the boundary, and he could now face a 1-match ban as per umpire’s decision. Big trouble… pic.twitter.com/uiTjvIqVhh
SRH vs LSG: Did Avesh Khan Flout The Laws?
However, upon a closer inspection of the rules, it can be said that, based on the circumstances, the actions of Avesh Khan did not infringe upon the cricket laws. According to Law 19, a ball becomes dead immediately after crossing the boundary rope or landing beyond the boundary rope. Since the shot was cleared the mid-off fielder and traveled directly outside the boundary, it was treated as a direct boundary.
According to Law 41, umpires can impose a five-run penalty only in cases of deliberate unfair play aimed at deceiving or obstructing the opposition. In this instance, Avesh's action near the dugout did not interfere with any Sunrisers Hyderabad fielder's attempt to prevent the boundary, which is why the umpires chose not to penalise the incident or consider the early celebration.
However, some experts and fans argued that enforcing the rule could have altered the outcome, as it may have increased the number of runs Lucknow Super Giants needed in that situation.
Lucknow Super Giants Seal The Win With A Dominant Performance
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 10th match of the ongoing IPL season, with skipper Rishabh Pant sealing the chase with a boundary in the final over. However, the match drew attention after fast bowler Avesh Khan's premature celebration near the boundary sparked debate.
Pant played a composed knock, remaining unbeaten on 68, as LSG successfully chased down a target of 157 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Sunday, April 5. On the penultimate ball, the left-hander struck a boundary, while Avesh Khan was seen celebrating before the ball had fully crossed the boundary line.
