Punjab Kings continued their impressive run in IPL 2026 with a commanding 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants, further strengthening their position at the top of the points table. The win once again highlighted the depth in their batting lineup, with experts pointing to young opener Priyansh Arya as a crucial element in the team's long-term strategy.
Speaking on Star Sports' Amul Cricket Live, former England captain Eoin Morgan praised Punjab Kings' batting depth, noting that the side has moved beyond reliance on individual stars and now operates as a well-rounded unit.
Morgan explained that Punjab Kings' strength lies in the collective contribution of their batting order rather than dependence on a single match-winner.
"Punjab Kings have
reached a very strong position where they are no longer solely reliant on their captain or a superstar to deliver every time. They were so far ahead in the game that individual contributions almost became secondary; such is their depth that they would likely have posted 230-240 regardless," Morgan said on JioStar.
He further added that the current structure allows key players such as Shreyas Iyer to play with reduced pressure, which in turn strengthens the overall performance of the side.
"When the rest of the batting unit is firing, it strengthens the side further, even if some players haven't had much time at the crease," he added.
Priyansh Arya's fearless approach earning praise
Much of the spotlight from Punjab's recent success has fallen on young batter Priyansh Arya, whose aggressive yet composed approach at the top has caught attention throughout the tournament.
Morgan described Arya as an essential part of the franchise's long-term blueprint, highlighting his clarity of thought and ability to capitalize on opportunities.
"It reflects a clear and confident mindset. He comes across as a transparent thinker who is making the most of his opportunities over time. This is not a short-term phase of form, it's part of a larger plan by Punjab Kings and Ricky Ponting, with a defined template in place. Priyansh Arya is undoubtedly a key component of that structure," Morgan said on JioStar.
Arya's rapid scoring in the powerplay has provided Punjab Kings with strong starts, allowing the middle order to build momentum rather than rebuild innings under pressure.
Cooper Connolly reflects on building partnerships
Punjab Kings batter Cooper Connolly also shared insights into his innings and his partnership with Arya during the match. The young all-rounder admitted that settling into the innings required patience, especially while batting alongside an aggressive partner.
"I was out there for a little while. I was 19 off 22. Priyansh wasn't saying much to me, so I was a little bit nervous. But spending some time out in the middle with him was great. I hadn't batted with him before. He's super exciting to watch," Connolly said on JioHotstar via JioStar.
Connolly explained that his focus shifted toward understanding the tempo of the innings and adjusting his rhythm accordingly.
"For me, it was about understanding what was happening at the other end. Priyansh was scoring quite quickly. I probably could have been a touch better at that, but it was enjoyable to spend some time out there. I just had to find my rhythm and my tempo," he added.
With Punjab Kings continuing to dominate through strong partnerships and fearless batting, the emergence of players like Arya and Connolly has further strengthened their credentials as serious title contenders in IPL 2026.
