Tottenham stay without a Premier League win in 2026 after a 2-2 draw at Burnley, where Cristian Romero’s 90th-minute header rescued a point and extended growing frustration, with Thomas Frank stressing
that calm decision-making and steady improvement remain vital as pressure builds around Spurs’ league form.
The match swung several times. Micky van de Ven gave Spurs the lead, before Axel Tuanzebe levelled just before half-time. Lyle Foster then thought Burnley had secured victory with a scruffy finish on 75 minutes, only for Romero to convert Wilson Odobert’s cross late on.
Frank accepted the increased scrutiny around Tottenham but insisted the performance showed commitment. "I know [we're under pressure] but you can't say we didnt do everything to win,Frank told BBC Match of the Day. We just need to keep improving. The only way it can be is calm heads, carry on and keep doing what we think is the right thing. "
Reflecting on missed chances and defensive lapses, Frank underlined how close Tottenham came to victory. "You see the game today. We do more than enough to win the game, we just need to defend better in two situations. And, of course, score another goal that could make the difference at 1-0. "
The head coach praised Tottenham’s strong opening and late response, yet highlighted inconsistency across the 90 minutes. "It's very important to focus on the start of the game. And the first half is really good. We came here, on top of it, creating chances, 1-0 and could have scored a second one. Then it's important to focus on how strong we ended with that character to keep fighting. But we have to improve the bit in the middle. "

Across the contest, the numbers highlighted Tottenham’s attacking control in this Premier League meeting with Burnley. Spurs produced 11 shots on target, constantly testing Burnley’s defence, while enjoying long spells in possession and forcing the Clarets back towards their own penalty area.
Those 11 efforts on target were Tottenham’s highest tally in a Premier League match since December 2023, when Spurs managed 12 against Newcastle United. It was also their most in any Premier League game they failed to win since December 2021, when they had 11 during a 1-1 draw with Southampton.
| Team | Match detail | Statistic |
|---|---|---|
| Tottenham | Vs Burnley, January 2026 | 11 shots on target |
| Tottenham | Vs Newcastle United, December 2023 | 12 shots on target |
| Tottenham | Vs Southampton, December 2021 | 11 shots on target, 1-1 draw |
Frank felt the game should have been finished long before Romero’s late equaliser, and pointed to one decisive lapse. "It was a game we dominated and created chances, scoring a goal. Should have scored a second one. Then we are out of sight. But we should never, ever, ever concede that goal just before half-time. "
Premier League impact for Tottenham defenders and Burnley
Despite the disappointment, Tottenham could note the influence of defenders in attacking areas. Van de Ven and Romero both scored, continuing a wider pattern. Spurs now have more headed goals, with 10, than any other Premier League side this season, and lead the division for goals scored by defenders, with nine.
Burnley’s result keeps the Clarets in difficulty near the bottom of the Premier League table. They have now gone 14 league matches without a win, recording five draws and nine defeats, matching their longest winless sequence in the top-flight since a run between August and October 1970.
Foster, who put Burnley 2-1 ahead, described mixed feelings inside the Premier League dressing room after Tottenham’s late response. "It's a disappointment. We did well to get ourselves in the game, especially with the first goal in the first half,Clarets goalscorer Foster said. Second half we were good as well, got the second goal and were unfortunate not to keep [the lead] and get three points. Overall, the dressing room is disappointed because I felt we could have taken all three points. Happy with the team performance but feel we should be getting more, and deserved more. "
The draw leaves Tottenham still searching for a first Premier League victory of 2026 and examining defensive details, even after another assertive attacking display, while Burnley’s extended winless run highlights ongoing struggles despite improved moments against one of the division’s leading sides.
