Every winning streak eventually meets its match, and for the Punjab Kings (PBKS), that match arrived in the form of a clinical Rajasthan Royals (RR) outfit. In a high-scoring thriller at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, PBKS suffered their first defeat of the IPL 2026 season, failing to defend a massive total of 223.
Before this Match 40 clash, Punjab had been the team to beat, sitting comfortably at the top of the table with a perfect record. However, a masterclass in power-hitting from RR's top order proved that even a "mountain of runs" isn't safe in the modern T20 era.
PBKS appeared to be in total control during the first half of the game. Their batters feasted on the Mullanpur track, putting up a daunting
223 runs. The atmosphere was electric as the home fans expected their team to march toward yet another victory. However, the Rajasthan Royals had other plans.
The chase was defined by a fearless opening stand. Young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set the tone with a rapid-fire 43 off just 16 balls, but it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who anchored the pursuit with veteran-like precision.
Jaiswal played a sublime knock of 51 from 27 deliveries, marking his 20th fifty-plus score for the Rajasthan Royals. His ability to find boundaries at will during the powerplay left the Punjab bowlers shell-shocked. Even when the Punjab Kings' spin wizard Yuzvendra Chahal eventually dismissed Jaiswal in the 12th over, the foundation for the chase was already rock-solid.
Where the Game Was Lost for PBKS
While Punjab's batting remained world-class, their bowling under pressure faltered for the first time this season. The lack of early wickets allowed RR to keep the required run rate manageable throughout the middle overs. Despite the best efforts of the PBKS pace attack in the death overs, the momentum generated by Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi was too much to overcome.
While PBKS remains a dominant force, this first loss exposes a few chinks in their armour specifically their defensive bowling on batting-friendly wickets.
For the Rajasthan Royals, this win is a statement of intent. By chasing down 223 against the league leaders, they have signaled to the rest of the competition that they have the firepower to win from any situation.
