India women's national tennis team will look to make the most of familiar conditions and strong home backing as they begin their Billie Jean King Cup 2026 Asia-Oceania Group I campaign at the DLTA Complex on Tuesday, April 7, with a place in the play-offs firmly in sight.
India endured a tough outing in the 2025 play-offs in Bengaluru, finishing third in Group G after a 1-2 loss to the Slovenia Fed Cup team and a 0-3 defeat against the Netherlands Fed Cup team, despite determined performances from debutants Shrivalli and Sahaja Yamalapalli.
That disappointing campaign marked the beginning of a transition phase, with the singles burden now falling on Sahaja and India's top-ranked player, Vaishnavi Adkar, who are set to spearhead the challenge.
Veteran Ankita Raina is expected to focus primarily on doubles, where her partnership with Rutuja Bhosale brings valuable experience. However, Captain Vishal Uppal could consider deploying Ankita in singles as well if the situation demands during the tournament.
Sahaja Yamalapalli, currently India's No. 2 and ranked 384 in the world, has built a reputation for consistency on the ITF circuit, reaching several semi-finals over the past year and even breaking into the top 300. Her steady rise has cemented her position as India's primary singles contender. She has also stepped onto the WTA stage with confidence, highlighted by a debut main-draw victory at the Chennai Open, showcasing her ability to challenge higher-ranked opponents.
Meanwhile, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty has proven her mettle in high-pressure situations while representing India, remaining unbeaten in singles during the team's impressive run at the 2025 Asia-Oceania Group I event, where she overcame several superior-ranked players. However, the rising superstar will not feature for Team India due to an injury that ruled her out of the tournament.
Speaking on the injury to Shrivalli, Team captain Uppal said, "Shrivalli withdrew from the team due to back spasm. Vaidehee Chaudhari (India number 3) would have replaced her, but she twisted her ankle on Thursday while practising with the team. She hasn't fully recovered, so we can't risk her. Zeel Desai has replaced her. "
"We have to work with and make the best of the cards dealt to us. I am focusing on what we have and how we make the most of it," he added.
Billie Jean King Cup 2026: Format
Placed alongside Indonesia, Korea, New Zealand, Mongolia, and Thailand, the hosts are set for a demanding campaign in a highly competitive group. With only the top two teams qualifying for the next stage and the bottom two facing relegation to Group II in 2027, the stakes are high. Each side will compete in a round-robin format, facing all five opponents once.
