Belgium secured their place in the 2026 World Cup with a commanding 7-0 win over Liechtenstein. Jeremy Doku and Charles De Ketelaere both scored twice, leading the charge for Belgium. This victory came
after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Kazakhstan, which delayed their qualification. Hans Vanaken opened the scoring early, heading in a deflected cross just three minutes into the match.
Jeremy Doku showcased his impressive form by netting two goals within seven minutes. His first goal came in the 34th minute, finding the bottom-right corner. He then capitalised on a loose clearance to score again from the edge of the box. Emanuel Zund almost added to Belgium's tally by hitting his own post before Belgium sealed their win with four more goals in quick succession during the second half.
De Ketelaere played a pivotal role in Belgium's attack. He inadvertently assisted Brandon Mechele's goal when the ball bounced off his back. Alexis Saelemaekers redeemed himself after missing an earlier chance by volleying in a rebound from Youri Tielemans' saved shot. De Ketelaere then completed the scoring with two rapid goals, including a powerful finish past Benjamin Buchel.
Rudi Garcia's team dominated with 23 shots against Liechtenstein, hitting the target 13 times and achieving an expected goals value of 3.13. Doku and De Ketelaere were efficient, scoring with both of their shots on target. Belgium remains unbeaten in their last 27 World Cup qualifiers since at least 2010.
Liechtenstein ended their campaign without scoring any goals while conceding 31 throughout qualifying. Doku had previously criticised Belgium's performance against Kazakhstan but was instrumental in ensuring they topped Group J.
Belgium's performance against Liechtenstein corrected previous shortcomings and highlighted their attacking prowess as they look forward to competing on football's biggest stage once again.
